The Grand Mayan at Vidanta Acapulco has long been one of Mexico's most impressive resort developments - a massive, architecturally ambitious property built around Mayan design motifs, with the lazy river as its most beloved feature. Families who know the Vidanta brand from Nuevo Vallarta or the Riviera Maya will recognize the DNA: suite-style rooms, meticulously maintained grounds, generous pool infrastructure, and staff that genuinely seems to enjoy their work. Before Hurricane Otis struck in October 2023, this was a premier family resort on the Pacific Coast.

The honest picture as of 2025 is one of a resort in recovery. The core of the Grand Mayan tower is operational, the pools and lazy river are open and well-maintained, and the service quality has held up remarkably well. But the beach remains damaged, the spa is closed, elevator access is limited, and only a portion of the property's restaurants and amenities are running. Travelers visiting now should read current guest reports carefully and set expectations for a partial experience compared to the resort's full pre-Otis form. The staff's professionalism under difficult circumstances has been widely praised.

This resort makes the most sense for families who are specifically drawn to Acapulco or who already own Vidanta or Hilton Grand Vacations points and are working with what's available. For travelers with flexibility, the Vidanta properties at Nuevo Vallarta or Riviera Maya are currently more complete experiences. That said, guests who have visited recently consistently say the core experience - the pools, the lazy river, the rooms, and the hospitality - remains strong enough to have an excellent vacation despite the ongoing recovery.

Pros

  • +The signature lazy river is a genuine standout - expansive, clean, and something families talk about for years after visiting
  • +Staff friendliness is consistently rated as exceptional, with housekeeping visiting twice daily and employees going out of their way to accommodate requests
  • +Multiple pools and water features that kept kids and families entertained for full days without needing to leave the property
  • +Suite-style rooms with generous square footage that feel more like apartments than hotel rooms, with separate living areas for families
  • +The Vidanta property grounds are beautifully landscaped, creating an oasis feel even in an urban Acapulco setting
  • +Access to multiple restaurants across the broader Vidanta Acapulco campus gives more dining variety than a standalone resort
  • +Location on Acapulco Bay provides dramatic Pacific views from the property and rooms
  • +Strong value relative to Vidanta's other flagship locations (Riviera Maya, Nuevo Vallarta) for travelers who have flexibility on which property to visit

Cons

  • The resort is still in partial recovery from Hurricane Otis damage - as of 2025, only portions of the property are operating, including limited elevator and floor access
  • The beach was severely damaged by Hurricane Otis and remains in a degraded state, which significantly changes the beach experience guests expect
  • No spa is currently available due to reconstruction, so guests seeking spa services need to plan accordingly
  • As a Hilton Grand Vacations Club property, check-in and resort communications involve persistent timeshare sales presentations that many guests find aggressive
  • Acapulco as a destination carries real safety concerns that deter some international travelers, even though the Vidanta resort itself operates as a self-contained environment
  • Limited activity options beyond the pools during the reconstruction period mean guests planning seven-plus night stays may run out of on-property things to do
  • Slow valet parking and front-desk wait times have been noted in multiple reviews, which is frustrating when arriving after a long journey
  • Guests who visited pre-Otis and return may be disappointed by how much of the former full experience is not yet restored
