Viva V Samana occupies a niche that almost no other Dominican Republic all-inclusive fills: a genuinely adults-only, genuinely remote resort on one of the most beautiful and undeveloped stretches of beach in the country. Bahia de Coson is the thing that anchors everything here - over a kilometer of white sand with calm, warm water and virtually no development outside the resort perimeter. The bungalow-style accommodations reinforce the sense of retreat, and the Samana Peninsula as a whole has a wilder, less commercialized energy than Punta Cana or Puerto Plata. Couples who book here specifically because they want to be away from it all tend to be the most satisfied guests, and they rate the experience very highly.

The practical experience involves real tradeoffs. Getting here requires a two-hour drive from Punta Cana airport, which is the most common source of frustration in guest reviews - the transfer is long, and arriving after a delayed flight to find another two hours on a bus is a real ask. Once you arrive, the remote location is both the point and the limitation: there is nowhere to go off-property without organizing a taxi or tour, which some guests find liberating and others find claustrophobic by day four. The dining is above average by DR all-inclusive standards, especially the wood-fired pizza and the a la carte options, though the buffet consistency varies more than it should. The smoke-permissive atmosphere and occasional staff upselling are smaller but genuine irritants for a portion of guests.

This resort is the right choice for adults traveling as couples who specifically want a quiet, remote beach experience in the Dominican Republic and are willing to plan around the long transfer. It is not competing with large Punta Cana all-inclusives for nightlife, variety, or convenience - it is competing for travelers who want to feel like they found somewhere genuinely off the tourist circuit while still being well looked after. Budget-wise it sits in the mid-tier DR market, offering strong beach-per-dollar value for those who prioritize location over activity breadth.

Pros

  • +Over 1 km of unspoiled beachfront on Bahia de Coson - one of the most pristine and undeveloped stretches of beach in the Dominican Republic
  • +Genuinely adults-only in a remote setting that delivers real quiet - this is not a party resort with a no-kids policy, it is a full decompress experience
  • +Bungalow accommodations with garden, ocean, and pool views create a resort-within-a-resort feel that sets it apart from standard hotel-block construction
  • +Wood-fired pizza and three a la carte restaurant options that outperform many Dominican Republic all-inclusives in terms of quality and distinctiveness
  • +Complimentary water sports including sailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding add activity value without extra charges
  • +Couples specifically rate the location extremely highly - the combination of remote beach, bungalow privacy, and calm water suits romantic travel well
  • +Premium all-inclusive package includes unlimited beverages, cocktails, and wine without the tiered drink restrictions some competitors apply
  • +Spa with hydrotherapy and Swedish massages plus yoga classes gives wellness-focused guests a credible program on a quiet beachfront property

Cons

  • Two-hour drive from Punta Cana International Airport makes transfers long, expensive, and tiring - the most consistently cited friction point in guest reviews
  • Truly remote location means there is essentially nothing walkable off-property - guests who want to explore or eat outside the resort have very limited options
  • Buffet quality is described as inconsistent, with some guests praising variety and others finding it disappointing after the first few days
  • Some room amenities including private plunge pools in bungalows have reliability issues reported across multiple reviews
  • Staff can apply soft pressure to guests to purchase upgrades or additional services, which some travelers find uncomfortable
  • Smoking policy is permissive compared to most Caribbean resorts - non-smokers have reported that this impacts their comfort in shared outdoor spaces
  • Limited evening entertainment options compared to larger all-inclusive resorts - guests expecting a full nightly show schedule will find the program modest
  • Wi-Fi is inconsistent in some parts of the property - remote location affects signal quality, and bungalows farther from reception often have weaker connectivity

This is our 4th year at the Viva Wyndham Samaná. There has been many changes at the resort. Selection of food has become less. Bottled water is eliminated to avoid too many plastic empty bottles. You can fill your glass bottle at the filling station...

It is an only adults hotel, which means quite and relaxing time. Beautiful and well maintained gardens. Beach is great, water is warm but rough. Maybe for younger people is good, they can use the boards/surfs that the hotel offer for free. It is fun!...

We had an amazing vacation. Our goal was strickly rest and relaxation, which was what we got. It's an adult only hotel, which we prefer. The age group was roughly 50+, but we assume it's the time of the year for the snow birds. Either way, it was per...
