The Iberostar Waves Tucan is the resort in the Riviera Maya that keeps getting recommended for one non-negotiable reason: the jungle. An actual natural jungle runs through the property between the Tucan and Quetzal sections, and it is genuinely wild - howler monkeys hang in the trees, spider monkeys jump onto upper-floor balconies, coatis roam the pathways, peacocks wander through common areas, and iguanas are literally everywhere. This is not a zoo or a staged wildlife exhibit - it's the real Yucatan jungle that the resort was built around, and travelers treats it as the specific reason to choose this property over comparably priced alternatives.

Beyond the wildlife angle, the resort holds up well. Playacar Beach is one of the better stretches in the Riviera Maya, the food gets consistently good reviews for an AI at this price point (especially the Mexican food at the buffet), and the location inside the gated Playacar community with walkable access to Playa del Carmen is a genuine advantage. The safe-walk-to-PDC factor adds a lot of value - you get the all-inclusive convenience with easy access to Playa's restaurants, shopping, and nightlife when you want something different.

The caveats are real though. No AC in public areas is a serious quality-of-life issue in summer. The 2025 theft allegation is alarming enough to take seriously if it recurs in reviews. And the 2026 renovation shutdown means anyone planning a trip needs to check current status carefully. At the right time of year (winter through spring, before seaweed season) and with awareness of what it is - a mid-range AI in a unique natural setting, not a luxury property - the Tucan punches well above its price point. Best for nature lovers, couples wanting a jungle feel, and families who want wildlife plus beach access.

Pros

  • +On-site natural jungle between the Tucan and Quetzal sections with howler monkeys, spider monkeys, coatis, iguanas, peacocks, flamingos, and dozens of bird species - unique in the Riviera Maya
  • +Fantastic Playacar Beach - widely considered one of the best beaches in the Riviera Maya, consistently cleaner and less rocky than the Iberostar Paraiso complex beaches further north
  • +Walking distance to Playa del Carmen (about 30 minutes through a safe gated residential area, or a 5-minute cab) giving easy access to 5th Avenue shopping, restaurants, and nightlife
  • +Excellent food for the price point - the buffet Mexican food gets specific praise, and a la carte restaurants (Japanese hibachi, Italian, steakhouse, Mexican) are included in longer stays
  • +Located inside the Playacar gated community, which guests consistently describe as very safe - solo travelers and families both feel comfortable
  • +Reasonably priced relative to quality - frequently cited as one of the best value AIs in the Riviera Maya at its price tier
  • +Family rooms connect two units (king + two doubles with separate bathrooms), making it practical for multi-room family bookings
  • +Good snorkeling excursions available through the resort's dive crew, with SDI Divers specifically praised for well-organized trips

Cons

  • Limited air conditioning in public areas - the buffet and most common areas are not air-conditioned, which becomes genuinely unpleasant in summer months when temperatures hit the 90s
  • No elevators - rooms on upper floors require stair climbing, which is a real inconvenience with luggage or for guests with mobility limitations
  • Theft incident documented in late 2025 with a serious allegation: a guest claims staff stole valuables while they were on a Zoom call, and management obstructed the police report - multiple posts share this story as a warning
  • Sargassum (seaweed) is an ongoing seasonal risk on Playacar Beach - while the beach is generally better than further north, it's still subject to the same regional seaweed issues in summer and fall
  • Scheduled for major renovations in 2026 that will temporarily close the property - travelers planning trips should verify current renovation status before booking
  • A la carte restaurant access is limited by length of stay - 7 nights gets you 2 restaurant reservations, which can feel restrictive for guests who prioritize fine dining
  • Larger resort complex (Tucan + Quetzal combined) means longer walks between sections than a boutique property
  • At least one guest reports getting sick from food there (though acknowledged as isolated to their experience)
