Majestic Colonial is one of the most consistently recommended Punta Cana resorts in the mid-to-upper price tier, and the reason is straightforward: the experience consistently exceeds what the price tag suggests. Important update: the resort closed on April 6, 2026 for a massive $35M renovation and is scheduled to reopen November 12, 2026. All 636 rooms are getting completely redone with new bathrooms, a new Family Suites category is being added, an all-ages water park is under construction, a new Italian restaurant with al fresco terrace is coming, the Supreme International Buffet is being renovated, and the fitness center and pool decks are being overhauled. When it reopens, this will be a substantially different property.
Before the closure, the practical experience required a bit of strategy to maximize. Restaurant reservations at the Mexican and seafood spots filled on day one, so booking immediately after check-in was essential. The steakhouse and Italian didn't require reservations and were reliably good. The buffet was solid for breakfast and covered lunch well. The beach management was impressive - staff raked and maintained the sand constantly and had a good system for pushing the seaweed barrier days back quickly. Pool area was lively and the entertainment team worked hard. With the renovation adding a new Italian restaurant and completely reimagined buffet, the dining experience should improve significantly when it reopens.
Majestic Colonial is best for travelers who want a genuinely fun, social all-inclusive vacation with a great beach and strong service without the ultra-premium price of Paradisus or JOIA properties. The $35M renovation and new water park suggest the resort is repositioning itself to compete more directly with family-focused luxury properties. If you're booking for late 2026 or 2027, expect a fresh property with modern rooms and expanded amenities - but also potentially higher pricing to match the investment. If you need an adults-only environment throughout, look at Majestic Elegance next door or Catalonia Royal Bavaro.
Pros
- +Exceptional value for a higher-end all-inclusive - travelers consistently note the experience significantly exceeds the price point relative to comparable resorts
- +Beach on Bavaro is wide, well-maintained, and one of the better stretches in Punta Cana - staff rake seaweed daily and conditions are usually good
- +Five à la carte restaurants including a Mexican and seafood option with excellent quality reported for the steakhouse in particular
- +Large, lively pool area with consistent entertainment and activities throughout the day - excellent if you want an energetic atmosphere
- +Included access to Majestic Elegance (adults-only sister resort) for dining and select amenities - adds meaningful variety to a week-long stay
- +Staff and service get unusually high marks - travelers call out specific team members by name and describe genuinely warm, attentive interactions
- +Nightly entertainment and shows are legitimately good by all-inclusive standards - themed nights and local cultural performances are praised
- +Room sizes are generous even in base categories, with comfortable balconies and well-maintained linens and cleanliness
Cons
- −Resort closed April 6, 2026 for a $35M renovation and won't reopen until November 12, 2026 - all 636 rooms are being gutted and rebuilt, so no bookings possible until then
- −The resort accommodates families and can get loud, especially around the pool and during peak holiday weeks - not ideal if you prioritize quiet
- −Some a la carte restaurants require reservations and slots fill up quickly - if you don't book on day one you may miss out on your preferred option
- −Seaweed on the beach is a seasonal issue May through September - staff manage it but some days it significantly impacts the beach experience
- −Timeshare presentation invitations are aggressive at check-in and throughout the week - be prepared to decline firmly and repeatedly
- −Drink quality is inconsistent - the included liquor is mid-tier and cocktails vary significantly by which bar you visit
- −The resort is large and sprawling - rooms far from the beach require a significant walk or buggy ride, and the layout can be confusing for first-timers
- −Post-renovation pricing will likely increase - a $35M investment across 636 rooms suggests a repositioning toward a higher price tier
