Margaritaville Island Reserve Riviera Maya is a brand-new (opened 2023), boutique adults-only all-inclusive that takes the laid-back, tropical-escape brand identity seriously. The resort is small by Riviera Maya standards at just 148 rooms, and that intimacy is both its biggest strength and its main limitation. The service culture is exceptional - staff consistently deliver the kind of attentive, personal attention you'd expect at a much pricier resort. The LandShark Brewery is a genuine standout, offering house-brewed lagers, a casual smokehouse menu, and free tours that become a highlight for craft beer fans. Entertainment is lively for a boutique property, with nightly live music, themed shows, and a nightclub that keeps things going late.
The practical experience has a few rough edges. The most significant is the beach - sargassum erosion has left the waterfront largely unusable, which is a real problem at a resort called 'Island Reserve.' The pools compensate reasonably well with the dual-zone setup (a calm pool and an activity pool with swim-up bar), but if lying on white sand is your priority, be honest with yourself before booking. Dining is a genuine strength, with the buffet and a la carte restaurants earning praise well above the all-inclusive average, and the spa rounds out the luxury feel.
This resort is best for couples and friend groups who care more about vibe, service, and food quality than square footage of beach. It competes well against other Karisma properties like Azul Beach and outperforms most Riu or Barcelo properties on service and dining quality. The Riviera Maya has hundreds of all-inclusives; this one stands out for anyone who'd rather have a smaller, well-run property with real personality than a sprawling mega-resort with an anonymous feel. Budget-wise it sits in the upper-mid range - more than Sandals Cancun, less than Xcaret Arte.
Pros
- +First-ever beachfront LandShark Brewery brews beer on-site and offers free brewery tours - a genuinely unique experience you won't find at any other all-inclusive in Mexico
- +Two distinct pool moods: a calm chill pool for relaxing and an activity pool with games, swim-up bar, and a rotating DJ set - you can pick your energy level day by day
- +Service consistently called 'among the best at any all-inclusive' - staff remember drink preferences and deliver the kind of attentive care that usually requires a butler upgrade elsewhere
- +Spacious, bright rooms with maritime-inspired decor, custom furnishings, large walk-in showers, and excellent lighting that guests describe as noticeably above average for the price point
- +St. Somewhere Spa by Karisma offers a full treatment menu with the kind of serene atmosphere that earns repeat visits from guests staying only 4-5 nights
- +Nightly entertainment program with live bands, soloists, DJs, and themed nights - guests report the shows genuinely compete with bigger properties
- +Gym is well-equipped and rarely crowded, which is a small but real win for travelers who want to keep a routine
- +Buffet dining is praised as well above the all-inclusive norm, and the steakhouse is consistently called out as the meal of the trip
Cons
- −The beach is essentially unusable due to severe sargassum erosion - the resort looks stunning but if beach time is why you're going to the Riviera Maya, this is a fundamental problem
- −Only 148 rooms means the resort can feel buzzy and intimate but also means popular dinner times and the spa book up fast - plan ahead
- −A la carte restaurants close earlier than guests expect, and some travelers feel the variety of food concepts is limited relative to larger properties
- −The swim-up bar setup is great but the pools are compact compared to mega-resorts - if you want an enormous aquatic playground, look elsewhere
- −Some guests feel the all-inclusive price tag doesn't fully justify the offering when the beach is removed from the equation - the pool experience alone has to carry that weight
- −No kids allowed (adults-only), which is a pro for most guests but worth knowing if plans change or you travel with family
- −Puerto Morelos location means longer transfers from Cancun airport than resorts in the Hotel Zone - plan on 45-60 minutes each way
- −Nightclub gets mixed reviews - it's there and functional, but travelers expecting a high-energy standalone club may find it quieter than hoped
