Green One Playa Dorada occupies a distinctive niche in the Dominican Republic accommodation market - it's a villa and apartment complex set within the famous Playa Dorada golf course, offering something between a private vacation rental and a managed resort. The appeal is immediately clear: you get full-size accommodations with real kitchens, laundry machines, and in many cases your own private pool, all within a secure, beautifully landscaped golf environment. The property feels more like a quiet residential enclave than a conventional resort, which is exactly what its target guests are looking for.

The practical experience rewards guests who understand what they're booking. This is not a self-contained all-inclusive where everything is steps away - the beach requires a short golf cart shuttle, restaurant options are limited to two on-property establishments, and exploring Puerto Plata's dining scene means arranging transportation. Guests who embrace the self-sufficient villa lifestyle and treat the complex as a luxurious base camp consistently leave happy. The cleanliness standards are genuinely impressive by any measure, security is thorough, and the Playa Dorada beach itself is one of the nicest stretches of sand on the Dominican Republic's north coast.

Green One Playa Dorada suits extended-stay travelers, families or groups who want more space than a hotel room, golfers who want to be within the Playa Dorada complex, and travelers who prefer the feel of a private villa to a traditional resort. It competes less with all-inclusive chains like Iberostar and Riu (which dominate Playa Dorada's resort strip) and more with upscale vacation rentals. Budget travelers will find that electricity surcharges and the need to eat off-property regularly can erode any savings over a conventional all-inclusive, so the cost calculation is worth doing before booking.

Pros

  • +Spacious villa and apartment-style accommodations with full kitchens and in-unit washers and dryers - a major advantage over standard hotel rooms
  • +Private pools in villa accommodations give guests the feel of a luxury private rental with the security and services of a managed resort
  • +Set within the Playa Dorada golf course complex, the grounds are beautifully landscaped and genuinely peaceful compared to busy all-inclusive strips
  • +Security is exceptional with multiple checkpoints and round-the-clock patrols, making it one of the safest-feeling options in Puerto Plata
  • +Golf cart shuttle to the beach runs consistently and the beautiful Playa Dorada golden sand beach is just a 3-4 minute ride away
  • +Spotlessly clean accommodations with quality furnishings including brand-new beds, quality linens, and modern bathrooms praised across reviews
  • +La Fiamma restaurant on property provides Italian and international dining without needing to leave for basic meals
  • +Four outdoor pools across the complex give guests variety and prevent the crowding that plagues single-pool resorts

Cons

  • Beach is not on-site - you need the golf cart shuttle to reach Playa Dorada, which adds a logistical step compared to true beachfront properties
  • Electricity costs can be billed separately as a surcharge, catching guests off guard who assumed everything was included in their nightly rate
  • Booking category mismatches have occurred, with some guests receiving smaller accommodations than what they reserved and paid for
  • AC and electrical systems in some units have shown issues, with circuit problems triggering when multiple appliances run simultaneously
  • Pool hours cut off at 7pm, which limits evening swimming for guests who want to cool off after a hot day of activities
  • Construction and ongoing development within and around the Playa Dorada complex creates noise and aesthetic disruption in some areas
  • Restaurant options on the complex are limited to two, making self-catering via the in-unit kitchen or trips into Puerto Plata a frequent necessity for variety
  • Getting to Puerto Plata city center or Cabarete for nightlife and local dining requires a taxi or rental car since there's no walkable town nearby

I stayed here for 3 days in April 2018. The reviews about disrepair are accurate and some of the food is just average. But... That said, the staff was perfectly polite and helpful. Despite the disrepair, the place is immaculate. The buffets are a so...
