LHVC's Residence Suites are a fascinating contradiction: the sheer scale of the resort compound is genuinely impressive, with 19+ restaurants, 39+ bars, multiple pools, and a broad beach - yet the experience you actually have depends almost entirely on which wristband color you're wearing. Guests with higher-tier membership access describe a lavish, well-staffed all-inclusive that delivers on its promise. Those on base-level plans frequently report feeling second-class, with staff who are noticeably less helpful and restaurants that require wristbands they don't have. The suite accommodations themselves are a genuine highlight - full kitchen, living area, and dining space make these feel more like vacation rentals than hotel rooms.

The resort's kitchen facilities and the personal concierge service for Residence Suite guests are the most consistently praised features. When the concierge system works well, guests describe feeling genuinely taken care of. The pool and beach areas, while large and well-appointed, can feel very crowded during peak season, and the internal shuttle system for navigating the massive property can have long waits. Dining quality at the included restaurants gets mixed marks - the broader property has exceptional food at its premium venues, but access to those requires higher-tier wristbands.

This resort makes most sense for travelers who have researched the wristband system in advance and booked accordingly, or for larger family and friend groups who want apartment-style space and can absorb the cost of a higher membership tier. Budget-conscious travelers who book a base package hoping for a premium experience are the most likely to be disappointed. Puerto Plata itself has beautiful coastline and the nearby Ocean World theme park and cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres offer worthwhile day trips outside the complex.

Pros

  • +Massive resort complex with access to over 19 restaurants and 39 bars across the Lifestyle Holidays compound - the sheer variety is hard to match in the Dominican Republic
  • +Suite-style rooms with full kitchens, living rooms, and dining areas give you apartment-level space that most all-inclusives can't touch
  • +Stunning beachfront location in Puerto Plata with multiple beach areas spread across the expansive property
  • +Personal concierges assigned to Residence Suite guests who coordinate restaurant reservations, activities, and problem-solving throughout the stay
  • +Enormous pool complexes including adult-only and family sections with swim-up bars and dedicated attendants
  • +Nightclub and evening entertainment on-site means you never have to leave the complex after dark if you don't want to
  • +Wide range of water sports and land activities across the broader LHVC campus, including watersports, volleyball, and organized group activities
  • +Proximity to Puerto Plata's Ocean World Adventure Park and the historic Fortaleza San Felipe for day-trip options

Cons

  • The wristband color hierarchy is the resort's biggest controversy - staff visibly check wristbands before deciding how to treat guests, and lower-tier bands get noticeably worse service and limited restaurant access
  • Wi-Fi costs $45 per week or $7 per hour and the quality is poor - a paid add-on that frustrates nearly everyone who tries to use it
  • Aggressive and relentless timeshare sales presentations, with guests reporting pressure tactics, lengthy mandatory pitches, and difficulty saying no
  • Food quality and variety within the Residence Suites' included restaurants can feel underwhelming relative to the premium price, with the best dining reserved for higher membership tiers
  • The property is massive and sprawling - navigating between beaches, pools, and restaurants requires significant walking or waiting for internal shuttles
  • Maintenance inconsistencies show up in reviews: some guests report well-maintained suites while others describe plumbing issues and cleanliness shortfalls
  • The all-inclusive experience feels deliberately fragmented to upsell membership upgrades throughout your stay, which many guests find exhausting and manipulative
  • Check-in can be slow and confusing, with guests reporting waits of over an hour and unclear communication about which amenities their package includes

If you have not been to Costa Rica, you will probably like The DR but I found it very crowded, with VERY pushy locals and trash everywhere including on the beaches. LHVC itself is ok but with tiered service and special area's for VIP's and Members. W...
