Deep-sea fishing charter

Day trip · Saint Croix

Green Cay Marina, just east of Christiansted, is where much of the sport-fishing fleet ties up, and the fishing starts close: the shelf drops off near the island, so boats are in deep water minutes out of the harbour. The seasons are distinct. Wahoo run in autumn, mahi-mahi in winter, and summer brings tuna and marlin offshore and tarpon inshore. Anglers who want shallower water can book fly or bottom fishing for snapper, bonefish and tarpon instead.

Charters are private, for your own group, usually four hours nearshore or six to eight offshore, with rods, bait, ice, fuel and the fishing licence covered. Tipping the crew in cash is customary, and sunscreen should be non-aerosol. Before planning to cook what you land, ask the crew: ciguatera, a toxin carried up the food chain, is a problem in these waters.
