Dive or snorkel trip to La Caleta Underwater National Park
Day trip · Juan Dolio & Boca Chica, Dominican Republic
Divers head first for the Hickory, a ship sunk on purpose in 1984, now sitting upright at about 18 metres and covered in growth. La Caleta was the country's first underwater national park, a strip of reef, caves and wrecks off the coast between Boca Chica and Santo Domingo, opposite Las Américas airport. The bottom steps down in three terraces, so shallow coral from six metres suits beginners while deeper wrecks (El Limón and Capitán Alsina at about 30 metres, the Don Quico near 58) are for experienced divers. Expect grouper, rays, lionfish, octopus and turtles.
Boca Chica, next door, is the usual base for trips out.
