Mangrove kayak tour

Paddling here means narrow channels between mangrove roots on the sheltered east side of the island, at Lac Bay, a wetland on the Ramsar list. Tours start at a centre on the shore with lockers, showers and toilets, and the guide gives a short talk about how the mangroves work before you get in the kayak.

The short version is an hour on the water through the mangrove tunnels. The two-hour tour goes further into the bay and adds a snorkel stop among the roots. There is also a night paddle for the bioluminescence that lights up the water after dark. Guides are certified by STINAPA, the park authority, and kayaks, masks and dry bags are supplied. The water inside the bay is calm, so it is a gentle outing next to the dive-boat days on the west coast. Without a car, some tours run a shared pickup from hotels, though not from Rincon.
