Snorkel trip to the Underwater Sculpture Park

Twenty-six children cast in concrete stand in a ring holding hands, about five metres down in Molinere Bay, shallow enough to look down on from the surface with a mask. That ring, Vicissitudes, is the best known of more than sixty figures that British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor and local artists have sunk along the bay since 2006: a man at a typewriter tucked into the end of a gully, a stone fruit bowl on a table, a cyclist, a mermaid, a copy of the Christ of the Deep statue from the Carenage, and enlarged copies of Amerindian petroglyphs. The sea has crusted them over and changed them, and parrotfish, flounder and banded coral shrimp now live on them.

The bay is a short boat ride up the west coast from Grand Anse and St George's, and nothing is deeper than about 12 metres, so snorkellers see most of it and glass-bottom boats run there too. Most snorkel boats pair the sculptures with Flamingo Bay next door, the island's busiest snorkel spot. Both sit inside a marine protected area, and a per-person park fee is charged, paid on your own or through the boat.
