Whale watching in Samaná Bay
Day trip · Samaná, Dominican Republic · runs January to March

Every winter humpback whales come into Samaná Bay to mate and calve, and from mid-January to the end of March boats leave the main town dock in Samaná to watch them. The ride out toward the mouth of the bay takes 30 to 40 minutes, then the boat lines up and waits for the whales to come back up from each dive.
The open water near the mouth of the bay can be choppy, so anyone prone to seasickness should take tablets before boarding; some boats hand out pills and wristbands. From early February to mid-March some boats go out twice a day. Some trips stop at Cayo Levantado afterwards for a swim and lunch.
