Atelier Playa Mujeres vs UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya

Honeymooners and bachelorette groups who care more about dinner than leaving the resort end up weighing these two. Atelier is the big art-and-food resort inside the gated Playa Mujeres enclave, a short run north of Cancun airport (it admits guests 16 and up). Unico is the smaller boutique-styled property down near Akumal, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

What Real Travelers Say

Distilled from real traveler discussions and reviews for each resort.

Atelier Playa Mujeres

What travelers love

  • +Thirteen restaurants, twelve bars and two coffee shops for one property, with Wine Spectator, Distintivo T and AAA Diamond recognition on the kitchens, and the food is the reason most guests rebook rather than a bonus on top of the beach
  • +Playa Mujeres faces northwest instead of straight into the Caribbean, so it takes noticeably less sargassum than the Cancun Hotel Zone or the Riviera Maya, and crews have the guest beach cleared by about 9am most mornings
  • +All five pools run automatic heating, which matters in January when unheated pools along this coast sit at a temperature nobody wants to get into
  • +Built as a working art hotel rather than one with a lobby sculpture: an Art Walk through the public spaces, commissioned pieces throughout the 593 suites and the ATELIER Artist Service program that staff are trained around
  • +Inside the gated Playa Mujeres enclave about 18 miles and a 25-minute drive north of Cancun airport, which means no vendors working the sand, no timeshare pitch by the pool and no neighboring party resort bleeding bass through the night

Common complaints

  • −Maria Dolores by Edgar Nunez, the signature restaurant and the one worth planning a night around, carries an additional charge on top of the all-inclusive rate. Only INSPIRA Suites guests get a dinner there included, and the length of stay decides whether they do
  • −Ten of the thirteen restaurants require a reservation, including the buffet at La Consentida. Only Cafecito, Azucar, Alba and the poolside Bikini Azul are walk-ins, so a week here means booking your dinners on the day you arrive
  • −The fifth-floor infinity pool at El Cielo Sky Bar, the one in most of the photography, belongs to INSPIRA Suites guests from 10am to 4pm and only opens to the whole resort from 6pm. Guests who booked a Junior Suite on the strength of that picture are regularly caught out
  • −NUUP Spa treatments, the 18-hole Greg Norman golf course, motorized water sports and the Pet-It dog program are all billed separately, and Pet-It also needs advance confirmation because not every suite is pet-eligible
  • −At 593 suites this is a large resort wearing boutique language, and during peak weeks the main pool runs short of loungers not long after breakfast

UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya

What travelers love

  • +Boutique scale with 448 rooms creates an intimate all-inclusive atmosphere that feels genuinely different from the sprawling mega-resort model that dominates the Riviera Maya
  • +All rooms include Nespresso machines, well-stocked minibars replenished daily, pillow menus with aromatherapy options, and flat-screen TVs — in-room amenity quality runs well above the all-inclusive category standard
  • +Four restaurants covering Mediterranean, Yucatan, Asian, and international cuisines with a casual beachside buffet represent real culinary diversity with high-end execution
  • +Located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, giving practical day-trip access to both destinations without being in the middle of either's tourist crowds
  • +The all-inclusive package accommodates food allergies and special diets at a level of competence that guests with dietary restrictions specifically praise

Common complaints

  • −Service inconsistency has been flagged in recent 2025 reviews — room not cleaned for 30+ hours after check-in and room service coffee arriving 70 minutes late represent operational gaps that undermine the luxury positioning
  • −The location between Playa del Carmen and Tulum is quieter than either destination — guests wanting easy access to town dining and nightlife find it more remote than urban-adjacent alternatives
  • −At the upper end of Riviera Maya all-inclusive pricing, the service inconsistencies make value-for-money comparisons unfavorable in recent periods
  • −The boutique scale that creates intimacy also limits amenity breadth — fewer pool options, fewer restaurant choices, and less entertainment variety than larger resorts
  • −Peak season capacity at 448 rooms can still feel crowded at pool and beach areas given the property's compact footprint

The Verdict

The beach and the drive separate them, not the food. Guests who've done both rank Atelier's beach well ahead, and Playa Mujeres catches less sargassum than Akumal, where Unico's beach is the acknowledged weak point. Atelier is 30 to 40 minutes from the airport; Unico is 60 to 80. Both make you book dinner: ten of Atelier's thirteen restaurants need reservations you can only make on-site, while Unico's five can be booked before you land. Unico counters with a smaller footprint, Nespresso-and-minibar rooms and a lower rate, though recent stays flag uneven service. Beach people and short trips go Atelier; couples who skip the beach and want boutique scale for less go Unico.

Choose Atelier Playa Mujeres if…

The beach and a short airport run matter more than pre-booked dinners, and thirteen restaurants beat five over a full week.

The beach is an afterthought, you'd rather pre-book dinners and pay less for a smaller property with Tulum within reach.
