Paradisus Playa del Carmen - Riviera Maya vs Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort

Families of five with a toddler along, often with grandparents who want to eat well, compare these two. Paradisus is the all-suite, food-led Meliá at the north end of Playa del Carmen, sharing a site with its adults-only sibling; Dreams is the Hyatt family resort on the calmer Playa Mujeres coast north of Cancun.

What Real Travelers Say

Distilled from real traveler discussions and reviews for each resort.

Paradisus Playa del Carmen - Riviera Maya

What travelers love

  • +Dining is the reason experienced all-inclusive travelers rate this above its price band, and the lineup is genuinely deep: the Naos buffet with show cooking, Cappella for Italian, Mole for contemporary Mexican, Aguamarina for seafood, Fuego for Latin fusion, The Market for American barbecue and Bana for Asian fusion with teppanyaki tables and a sushi bar
  • +Five of the restaurants and bars across the complex hold the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, and there are tequila, mezcal, sake and martini bars rather than one generic lobby bar
  • +The water park is a real one, with water buckets and five slides plus a splash pool, and 2026 guests specifically name the pirate pool and the multi-level play structure as what sold them on the resort
  • +Supervised care covers ages 1 to 12, split into a Baby Zone for 1 to 4 and a Kids Zone for the older children, with a healthy snack stand, themed family parties and eco tours, which is a wider age range than most Riviera Maya resorts attempt
  • +Swim-up suites open straight onto the pool, come with a terrace hot tub, and 2026 reviewers consistently rate them worth the premium over a garden-view suite

Common complaints

  • −The beach is the weakest part of the resort: this stretch of coast gets real surf, and guest review panels on tour operator sites consistently score the beach well below the rooms and the pools
  • −A lot of what reads like all-inclusive is actually a paid tier or an add-on, including the Sal Steak Cave steakhouse, the YHI Spa, snorkeling, the beauty salon, 24-hour room service and the business centre
  • −Family Concierge is a separate room category you pay for, not a service everyone gets: the private lounge, the exclusive breakfast restaurant, La Palapa Grill, the poolside Bali beds and the complimentary steakhouse dinner all belong to that tier
  • −The two resorts book separately and the naming confuses people: the family side is Paradisus Playa del Carmen, formerly Paradisus La Esmeralda and still sold under that name by some agencies, while the adults-only side is Paradisus La Perla
  • −It sits at the far north end of Fifth Avenue around Calle 88, not in the walkable part of town, so the pedestrianised shopping and restaurant stretch is a taxi ride rather than a stroll

Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort

What travelers love

  • +Located in the quieter, upscale Costa Mujeres/Playa Mujeres corridor north of Cancun - calm, beautiful beach with less crowding than the Hotel Zone strip
  • +Complimentary transportation to and from the nearby Playa Mujeres Golf Club makes this a genuine golf-and-resort destination without extra logistics
  • +Unlimited Luxury dining means no reservations needed at any of the 9 restaurants - genuine freedom to eat when and where you want
  • +Kids' waterpark on-property goes beyond a splash pad to actual slides and water features that families with children specifically praise
  • +Hyatt World of Hyatt points earning and redemption integration for loyalty members

Common complaints

  • −Getting to Playa Mujeres from the Cancun airport requires a longer transfer than Hotel Zone properties - typically 45-60 minutes rather than 20-30
  • −Golf is not included in the Unlimited Luxury rate - additional fees for green fees, clubs, and cart add up
  • −Some travelers find the food 'mediocre' or 'not worth the price' despite Unlimited Luxury - execution is inconsistent across the 9 restaurants
  • −The Playa Mujeres/Costa Mujeres corridor is quiet - there is essentially nothing walkable beyond the resort itself
  • −Kids' waterpark is a positive for families but means the resort has a genuinely family-forward energy that adults-only seekers should note

The Verdict

Ages decide it. Paradisus takes children from age one, its slides and pirate pool suit kids ten and under, and a suite with a door that closes costs far less than Dreams' villa; the whole trip is often cheaper too. Food is its draw, but dinners need reservations (book ahead, or let Family Concierge handle it) and the beach has real surf. Dreams counters with the calmer beach, two bigger slides, a lazy river (officially Preferred Club only), a teen club and walk-in dining at nine restaurants, though its food is inconsistent, the 2016 build shows its age, and nothing is walkable. Toddlers and food-first grandparents go Paradisus; beach-first families with tweens and teens go Dreams.

Choose Paradisus Playa del Carmen - Riviera Maya if…

Your youngest is under four, the grandparents care about dinner, and you want a suite with a closing door without paying villa prices.

Choose Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort if…

A calm, swimmable beach, bigger slides and a teen club for older kids, walk-in dinners and World of Hyatt points outweigh deeper dining.
