Finest Playa Mujeres vs Paradisus Playa del Carmen - Riviera Maya
Parents of babies and under-sevens weighing a Cancun-area family all-inclusive compare these two constantly, usually with a budget in mind. Finest Playa Mujeres is the Excellence Collection's family resort on the calm coast north of Cancun; Paradisus Playa del Carmen is the family half of a Meliá complex at the far north end of Playa del Carmen.

What Real Travelers Say
Distilled from real traveler discussions and reviews for each resort.
Finest Playa Mujeres
What travelers love
- +Ten pools and fourteen jacuzzis across the property, many of them heated, with enough variety that guests find their preferred vibe without competing for space
- +Calmer, clearer water than most Mexico resorts thanks to the sheltered Playa Mujeres location, well north of the sargassum-heavy stretches of the Riviera Maya
- +Twelve restaurants and you don't book any of them except the teppanyaki at Shoji, which takes the 7 a.m. reservation scramble out of the trip entirely. The range is real: Duke's for lobster and seafood, Brass Steakhouse, Tinto & Tapas for Spanish small plates, Insieme for Italian, Lizo for Mexican, Shoji for Japanese, Las Dunas on the beach, plus adults-only Dommo and Le Petit Plaisir
- +Suites are large across the board: 800 sq ft entry-level Junior Suites, 950 sq ft Family Suites sleeping five, and swim-up, private-pool and two-storey rooftop-terrace-with-plunge-pool categories running up to 3,400 sq ft
- +The Imagine Lounge is mealtime childcare, open 7 to 11 a.m. and 5 to 10:30 p.m. for potty-trained children aged three and up, so parents actually get a quiet breakfast and dinner
Common complaints
- −The kids club tops out at eleven and teenagers are the worst-served guests here. Imagine Kids Club runs a Mini Club for ages 0 to 2 with a parent and 3 to 6 for drop-off, and a Maxi Club for 7 to 11; the FAQ mentions a teen entertainment lounge but the resort's own kids pages name nothing above age eleven, families with kids aged seven and up report the programming skews much younger than the marketing suggests, and teens are shut out of the Excellence Club pools, lounge and restaurants entirely
- −Very strict pool chair enforcement with security clipboards is described by some travelers as oppressive rather than relaxing, and it still doesn't fully stop the towel race. A February 2026 guest report had the main pool claimed by 7 a.m.
- −It is not a true adults-only resort, which surprises guests who assume the Excellence connection means adult exclusivity. Only the Excellence Club section, the Dommo and Le Petit Plaisir restaurants and the Glow lounge keep children out, and in summer the family clientele makes the rest of the property substantially louder and more crowded than the branding suggests
- −Late-night options for adults are thin: the Excellence Club Lounge closes at 11 p.m. and its bar only runs 3 to 11 p.m., Glow Cocktail Lounge covers 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., and no dedicated nightclub appears among the resort's twelve bars and lounges
- −Specialty restaurant food is described by some travelers as good rather than great, which stings a little at this price positioning
Paradisus Playa del Carmen - Riviera Maya
What travelers love
- +Dining is the reason experienced all-inclusive travelers rate this above its price band, and the lineup is genuinely deep: the Naos buffet with show cooking, Cappella for Italian, Mole for contemporary Mexican, Aguamarina for seafood, Fuego for Latin fusion, The Market for American barbecue and Bana for Asian fusion with teppanyaki tables and a sushi bar
- +Five of the restaurants and bars across the complex hold the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, and there are tequila, mezcal, sake and martini bars rather than one generic lobby bar
- +The water park is a real one, with water buckets and five slides plus a splash pool, and 2026 guests specifically name the pirate pool and the multi-level play structure as what sold them on the resort
- +Supervised care covers ages 1 to 12, split into a Baby Zone for 1 to 4 and a Kids Zone for the older children, with a healthy snack stand, themed family parties and eco tours, which is a wider age range than most Riviera Maya resorts attempt
- +Swim-up suites open straight onto the pool, come with a terrace hot tub, and 2026 reviewers consistently rate them worth the premium over a garden-view suite
Common complaints
- −The beach is the weakest part of the resort: this stretch of coast gets real surf, and guest review panels on tour operator sites consistently score the beach well below the rooms and the pools
- −A lot of what reads like all-inclusive is actually a paid tier or an add-on, including the Sal Steak Cave steakhouse, the YHI Spa, snorkeling, the beauty salon, 24-hour room service and the business centre
- −Family Concierge is a separate room category you pay for, not a service everyone gets: the private lounge, the exclusive breakfast restaurant, La Palapa Grill, the poolside Bali beds and the complimentary steakhouse dinner all belong to that tier
- −The two resorts book separately and the naming confuses people: the family side is Paradisus Playa del Carmen, formerly Paradisus La Esmeralda and still sold under that name by some agencies, while the adults-only side is Paradisus La Perla
- −It sits at the far north end of Fifth Avenue around Calle 88, not in the walkable part of town, so the pedestrianised shopping and restaurant stretch is a taxi ride rather than a stroll

The Verdict
Beach versus water park. Finest has the better beach (calm, clear, little sargassum) and no dinner reservations except Shoji's teppanyaki, but its toddler splash area sits inside the kids club with no drink service, and only Family Suites have a separate bedroom. Paradisus puts a pirate pool off the main pool, runs a water park with a heated toddler area, and Family Concierge swim-up suites have a true bedroom; the catch is a surfy, seaweedy beach, and every restaurant takes reservations without the concierge and food reports swing from great to dreadful. Paradisus often quotes lower via Meliá's app. Beach-first parents who hate booking dinner go Finest; families wanting a water park, a nap-time bedroom and a deal go Paradisus.
