Isla Chora kayak and snorkel trip

Day trip · Costa Rica

Isla Chora is the small island at the south end of Sámara Bay, and the reef in front of town keeps the water inside it calm enough to paddle out in about twenty to thirty minutes, by sit-on kayak or paddleboard. Guides lead the way from the south end of Playa Sámara.

Once there you get roughly two hours on the island: snorkel around its rocks for reef fish, starfish and sometimes turtles, poke around tide pools full of hermit crabs, and watch iguanas sunning on the hillside. Fruit and drinks come along. Trips leave morning or afternoon to match low tide, take about three hours, and are not for children under four. Wind can make the paddle back harder work and stir up sand, which spoils the visibility.
