Diamante Eco Adventure Park

Adventure park · Costa Rica

The zip line here runs face-down. Diamante's Superman line is close to 1.5 km long and doubled, so two people fly side by side over dry forest with the Gulf of Papagayo in front of them. The park sits on a hillside running down to the sea at Matapalo, a few hundred metres east of the two Riu hotels.

The Adventure Pass is the full day: the zip line course with hanging bridges and a nine-metre Quick Jump free fall, the animal sanctuary, a botanical garden with a replica century-old Costa Rican farmhouse where you grind coffee, make chocolate and press sugarcane, and Hammock Beach with paddleboards and kayaks. A Costa Rican buffet with vegetarian and gluten-free dishes is included at the ocean-view restaurant, served from late morning to mid-afternoon. The sanctuary holds rescued animals in large enclosures: sloths, jaguars, pumas, monkeys, crocodiles, snakes, frogs, toucans and a butterfly garden. Cheaper passes cover only the zip line or only the sanctuary, and there are ATV (16 and over) and horseback tours.

Zip-liners must weigh between 27 and 130 kg, wear closed shoes with firm soles, and tie long hair back. Handheld phones and cameras are banned on the lines, so photos are bought from the park, though a GoPro on a chest or helmet mount is allowed. The zip line takes about two hours. The park opens daily from 8:30 to 4:30, runs in the rain unless there is lightning, and has a shuttle from many Papagayo and Tamarindo hotels. Booking ahead is wise.
