Mayan Eden

An animal park up in the forested hills above Coxen Hole, away from the beaches. A guide walks you round two-toed sloths, spider monkeys, coatis, deer and a kinkajou, plus macaws, toucans and parrots, most of them loose in the trees rather than in cages. There is a butterfly garden shared with hummingbirds, a long swinging suspension bridge, and carved Maya stelae set along the paths.

The canopy line is the other half of the visit, a guided zipline of about a kilometre through the treetops that takes around 45 minutes. A walk round the animals and a run on the zipline fill a morning, and some tours pair it with a stop at a chocolate maker.
