Mayflower Maya site

Ruins · Belize

Three small Maya sites lie inside Mayflower Bocawina National Park, which was set up in 2001 in part to protect them: the main Mayflower plaza, the Maintzunun temple mound and T'au Witz. None has been excavated, so what you see are forest-covered mounds rather than cleared stone temples. Maintzunun, whose name means "small hummingbird", stands near the visitor centre and has 11 structures, among them two pyramid mounds and two ancient water reservoirs. Finds there, from pottery and a crushed vase to an effigy censer and a stone bead, date to about 800 to 900 AD. A small teaching centre in the plaza covers the area's ancient Maya.

The mounds are only a short walk from the visitor centre, so most people pair them with a waterfall. Bocawina Falls is the easy family trail, Antelope Falls the steep one. Entry to the park is paid, and over 300 bird species have been logged here, toucans and all three of Belize's motmots included.
