Pelican Bar boat trip
Day trip · White House, Jamaica
A wooden shack on stilts, standing on a sandbar about a mile out in Parottee Bay. A fisherman called Floyd built it in 2001 as a place for his friends to stop for a beer, and it now draws boats from all along the south coast. They serve cold drinks and seafood, locals play dominoes, and you swim off the sandbar between rounds. Visitors carve their names into the planks. Hurricane Melissa flattened it, and the owner rebuilt it plank by plank; it now runs on solar power.
The usual way out is a small boat from Treasure Beach, about 25 minutes each way, and the whole outing takes around three hours. Late afternoon for the sunset is the favourite slot. Catamaran days from the south coast also call in, with an open bar on board, but drinks at the bar itself are paid for.
