Traveler Insights(310 discussions)

Decameron Galeón occupies an interesting niche in the Colombia travel landscape: it is a true all-inclusive beach resort in a country that does not have many of them, on a coast most international travellers know less well than they should. The property sits directly on 200 metres of Caribbean coast at Pozos Colorados, 20 minutes from Santa Marta, with 244 rooms split into 110 standard rooms, 14 suites and 120 garden villas, two pools, five restaurants and nightly entertainment, at prices that make comparable Caribbean island all-inclusives look extravagant. Decameron's own site now titles it Decameron Galeón, A Ramada All Inclusive, a brand tag that has not changed what it is. The Sierra Nevada rising behind the coast on clear days gives the setting a drama you will not find in Cancun or Punta Cana.

Honest expectations matter here. The rooms are dated and compact, and only the tenth floor got a remodel in June 2024 (modern bathrooms, double or twin beds, sea-view balconies), so ask for one of those. The food earns middling reviews: the Wayuu buffet covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, while the four specialty venues, El Rancho grill, Mama Mia Italian, Panasiático Asian and Rococo seafood, serve dinner only from 6:30 to 9pm and all need a reservation, with Panasiático and Rococo the ones guests rate above the buffet. What the property does well is atmosphere, staff warmth and activity programming: a tennis court, beach volleyball, non-motorized water sports, a gym, a disco, four bars and nightly shows with the hotel's in-house ballet troupe. Two things to know before booking: Wi-Fi is in common areas only, not in rooms, and there is no kids club, just a children's pool and the general evening shows.

Decameron Galeón suits budget-conscious families and couples who want hassle-free Caribbean beach time and understand they are getting a three-star all-inclusive. The real bonus is the region: Tayrona National Park is one of South America's great natural treasures, with hiking trails, secluded beaches and dense jungle, though from this side of Santa Marta it is a full day out rather than a quick hop. Santa Marta's colonial historic district and its seafood restaurants are 20 minutes away and reward an evening off property. For Tayrona access combined with a cheap, comfortable all-inclusive base, this remains one of the best value options on the coast.

Pros

  • +One of the most affordable all-inclusive stays in Colombia, listed by the chain and the big booking engines at a fraction of what a comparable Caribbean island resort charges for a full-board beach week
  • +True beachfront on 200 metres of Caribbean coast at Pozos Colorados, 20 minutes from Santa Marta, with the Sierra Nevada rising behind the coast on clear days
  • +Two pools, one for adults and one for children, and nightly shows that include the hotel's own in-house ballet troupe keep the property lively after dark
  • +Five restaurants for a 244-room hotel: the Wayuu buffet plus four reservation-only dinner venues, El Rancho (grilled meats cooked to order), Mama Mia (Italian, opened 2024), Panasiático (Asian with live cooking) and Rococo (fish and seafood), which is more variety than most budget all-inclusives in the region
  • +Staff consistently described as warm, friendly and willing to solve problems, with the front desk and service teams singled out for effort
  • +Tennis court, beach volleyball, non-motorized water sports, a gym with cardio and strength machines, a disco and four bars are all inside the rate
  • +The 120 villas, set in the gardens and sleeping two to four, give families and groups a more private option than the standard block, and the 14 suites add a balcony with the best views
  • +A workable base for Tayrona National Park and Santa Marta's colonial centre, both day trips rather than walks

Cons

  • −Facilities are aging and maintenance has not kept pace everywhere: rooms feel dated and compact, and some guests report cleanliness issues on arrival that needed a room change. The June 2024 remodel of the tenth-floor rooms (modern bathrooms, sea-view balconies) is partial, so ask for a remodelled room
  • −The beach can feel crowded when the hotel is full, and it is narrower and less dramatic than the Caribbean beaches in the brochures
  • −Long lines at restaurants and amenities during peak periods, and service responsiveness varies enough that two guests in the same week can have very different experiences
  • −Bugs and insects inside rooms come up in multiple reviews, a familiar coastal Colombia problem but still a complaint
  • −Food quality earns average marks at best: the buffet reads as monotonous and the a la carte venues help without transforming the week
  • −Kilometre 17 on the Ciénaga road means a taxi to central Santa Marta (20 minutes), to El Rodadero or to anywhere else, and Tayrona is on the far side of the city
  • −Not a polished, upscale all-inclusive: Wi-Fi is in common areas only, not in rooms, there is no kids club, and the value depends entirely on arriving with three-star expectations

Common Questions

How far is Decameron Galeón from Tayrona National Park?
Further than the brochures imply. Santa Marta to the park's main El Zaino entrance is about an hour by road, and the resort sits 20 minutes on the far side of the city on the Ciénaga road, so budget roughly an hour and a half each way by taxi or shared transport. It is still a popular day trip, and many guests give it one or two days of a week-long stay. Park entry requires advance reservations in peak season, so book before you arrive in Colombia.
Is the beach good for swimming?
The beach at Pozos Colorados is usable and right on the property, but it is not a standout Caribbean beach. The sand is narrower than photos suggest and the water can have moderate wave action, so the two pools are where most guests spend their water time. For calmer, cleaner conditions, El Rodadero is a short taxi ride up the road.
How does Decameron Galeón compare to staying in Santa Marta's city hotels?
The all-inclusive model is genuinely more economical if you plan to eat most meals at the resort and value the activity programming. City hotels in Santa Marta give you better access to the historic downtown and its excellent local restaurant scene. Decameron makes sense if beach access, pool time and having everything in one place matter more than urban exploration; it is 20 minutes out, so every trip into town is a taxi.
Is this resort good for families with young children?
It works for families on price and setting, with a dedicated children's pool, nightly shows and villas that sleep up to four, but there is no kids club or structured children's programming, so parents provide the daytime entertainment. The standard rooms are small for a family, so book a villa (two to four guests) or one of the 14 suites rather than counting on connecting rooms.
What's the food actually like - is the all-inclusive worth it?
Worth it purely on cost if you eat most meals at the resort. The Wayuu buffet handles breakfast, lunch and dinner and gets middling reviews; the four specialty restaurants, El Rancho grill, Mama Mia Italian, Panasiático Asian and Rococo seafood, serve dinner only from 6:30 to 9pm and all require a reservation, so book your nights early. Panasiático and Rococo are the ones guests rate above the buffet. Drinks are included across four bars. If food matters to you, plan a couple of dinners in Santa Marta, which has excellent seafood and is well worth the taxi fare.
