Iberostar Waves Bahia is the all-inclusive that almost no North American resort traveler considers, which is either a bug or a feature depending on your perspective. Located at Praia do Forte in Bahia state - a stretch of northeastern Brazil coastline that Brazilians consider among their country's finest - this resort delivers reliable Iberostar standards in an environment that feels completely different from the Mexico-Dominican Republic-Caribbean circuit that dominates AI travel discourse. The beach is lined with natural reef pools filled with tropical fish and sea turtles. The TAMAR turtle project station is a short walk from the resort zone.

The food here leans into Bahian cuisine in ways that make it meaningfully different from generic AI buffets. Moqueca (Brazilian fish stew with coconut milk), fresh local seafood, tropical fruits not commonly found elsewhere, and Brazil's celebrated churrasco tradition all make appearances. Entertainment skews cultural - capoeira demonstrations, forró dance classes, and samba rhythms replace the Las Vegas-style shows you'd find in Cancun. The overall atmosphere is noticeably warmer and more personal than Caribbean mega-resorts.

This resort is best suited for experienced all-inclusive travelers who've done Mexico and the Caribbean multiple times and want something genuinely different, or Brazil enthusiasts who want a comfortable base to explore the country's beach culture. The logistics are more complicated - flights require planning and Brazil's travel requirements warrant research - but for the right traveler, Praia do Forte's natural beauty and Bahian culture make this a memorable escape from the standard all-inclusive circuit.

Pros

  • +Located on the Praia do Forte stretch of Bahia state - one of Brazil's most celebrated beaches with natural tide pools teeming with marine life
  • +Iberostar's Waves line offers reliable all-inclusive standards with the brand's characteristic attention to environmental commitments
  • +Access to Praia do Forte's famous ecological turtle protection station (TAMAR Project) - a rare opportunity to see sea turtle conservation up close
  • +Brazil's laid-back beach culture translates well to resort stays - expect warmer, more personal service interactions than European Caribbean counterparts
  • +Capoeira, forró dancing lessons, and Brazilian cultural experiences built into the entertainment calendar
  • +Freshly caught local seafood incorporated into menus - Bahian cuisine (moqueca, acarajé-inspired dishes) gives the dining experience a genuinely local flavor
  • +Year-round warm weather and lower peak-season crowding compared to Mexico or Caribbean hotspots
  • +Genuinely unique destination among all-inclusive resort travelers - most travelers all-inclusive discourse skips Brazil entirely, making this an under-the-radar find

Cons

  • Zero travelers presence makes it impossible to get crowd-sourced real-time review data the way you can for Mexico or Dominican properties
  • Longer and more complex flights from North America compared to Cancun or Punta Cana - typically involves connections through São Paulo or Miami
  • Portuguese-language resort environment means non-Portuguese speakers may find navigation less seamless than at Caribbean all-inclusives built for English speakers
  • Brazil's political and safety context creates hesitation for some travelers, though Praia do Forte's resort zone is well-managed
  • Less competitive pricing versus equivalent-quality Caribbean resorts - Brazil's all-inclusive market is less developed and pricing reflects that
  • Jellyfish season in certain months can affect beach usability - local knowledge on timing is important
  • Fewer excursion options in immediate vicinity compared to Mexico's ruins, cenotes, and ziplines
  • Iberostar Waves is a mid-tier line, not the premium Selection or Grand categories, so expectations should be calibrated accordingly

This is our third time visiting in 10 years and we love this place. We booked surf lessons for my 5 year old and the teachers were amazing. They catered the lessons to his age, spoke to him in English, won him over in less than 2 minutes, and he had...
