Playa Mujeres is the newer, more polished property with calm, sheltered, seaweed-free water — the overall product most reviewers rate higher. Excellence Punta Cana's trump card is its wide, natural, palm-backed Dominican beach — bigger and more classically Caribbean than anything at Playa Mujeres, though with rougher surf. Flight logistics often settle it: Cancún is an easier, cheaper hop from most of North America. All else equal, Playa Mujeres is the safer pick; Punta Cana rewards travelers who want that big wild beach and a slightly slower Dominican pace.
