El Carmen is the newer showpiece: huge modern suites, roughly 22 pools, and an abundance of swim-up and plunge-pool rooms. Excellence Punta Cana is the older classic with a more intimate, grown-in feel — but its stretch of ocean is rougher and less swimmable than most expect from Punta Cana. Room-and-pool people will be happier at El Carmen; travelers who prize a more established, cozier atmosphere lean Punta Cana. Neither has truly calm water, so serious ocean swimmers should temper expectations at both.
