Excellence Carmen Punta Cana has been called that only since August 2026. It is the resort you may know as Excellence El Carmen, and the brand's own announcement is unambiguous that the name is the only thing that changed: the inclusions, the suites, the restaurants and the service are the same. It is also, confusingly, a different property from Excellence Punta Cana, which the brand points out in the same announcement. What sits behind the new name is an all-adult, all-suite resort of 492 suites on a golden sand beach at Playas de Uvero Alto, open since 2017, with twenty three pools spread across 79,000 square feet of grounds, a modern white-architecture look that still photographs better than most of its neighbours, and more social energy than the quieter resorts in the same collection.

The practical experience is strong where it counts. Nine a la carte dinner restaurants cover Mexican, Asian with teppanyaki, French, steak, lobster and seafood, Italian, contemporary Indian and the Excellence Club's own Magna, and none of them require a reservation except a teppanyaki table at Spice, which removes the single most annoying chore of a big all-inclusive. Portions are the recurring food complaint rather than quality. Suites all come with an oversize Jacuzzi for two, an espresso machine and a stocked minibar with premium liquor, and the upper categories add swim-up access, private pools or two-story rooftop terraces with a plunge pool. The Miile Spa is a genuine hydrotherapy facility with a cold-plunge pool, Swedish saunas, an ice-treatment room and an outdoor oceanfront treatment room. Service, and specifically staff remembering names and preferences, is what guests single out most.

This suits couples and groups in their late twenties through early forties who want a polished adults-only resort with evening energy, and it handles larger parties well. It is the wrong choice for anyone wanting hushed, monastic quiet, and anyone whose trip hinges on beach time should look hard at the sargassum calendar and aim for December through April. Rates for two run roughly $250 to $660 a night depending on category and season, which puts it below the top of the Punta Cana adults-only market while beating most of that market on dining freedom. The airport is 40 minutes away and La Romana 70, there is effectively nothing outside the gates in Uvero Alto, and the usual day trips are Hoyo Azul, Scape Park and Saona Island.

Pros

  • +Dinner reservations are not required at any restaurant, which is rare at 492 suites. The fact sheet says so outright, and the only exception is a teppanyaki table at Spice. Show up when you are hungry
  • +Nine a la carte dinner restaurants and real range across them: Agave for Mexican, Spice for Asian with teppanyaki stations, Chez Isabelle for French, The Grill steakhouse, The Lobster House, Oregano trattoria, Basmati for contemporary Indian and Magna at the Excellence Club, plus a buffet, the Las Olas beach grill and takeaway wood-oven pizza
  • +Twenty three pools covering 79,000 square feet, which means you can almost always find a quiet one, plus 9 outdoor hot-water Jacuzzis with 7 of them inside the Excellence Club
  • +The Miile Spa Aqua Wellness circuit is a proper hydrotherapy facility, not a token wet area: hydrotherapy pool with swan-neck and waterfall hoses, bubble massage lounger, temperature-contrast walk, cold-plunge pool, Swedish saunas, steam bath, ice-treatment room and four themed showers, with 7 indoor treatment rooms and an outdoor oceanfront one
  • +Every room is a suite with an oversize Jacuzzi for two, an espresso machine, a stocked minibar with an in-suite premium liquor selection, a pillow menu and 24-hour room service. Categories run from garden-view junior suites up to swim-ups, suites with private pools and two-story rooftop terraces with their own plunge pool
  • +The included activity list is unusually deep for an adults-only resort: scuba instruction, snorkeling gear, sailing, sea kayaking, tennis with private lessons, a pickleball court, bocce, archery, air rifle shooting, cooking and dance lessons, yoga and a 4,000 square foot gym with daily classes
  • +Staff personalization is the thing guests return for. Employees make a consistent effort to learn names and preferences, and it reads as culture rather than script
  • +Adults-only with a genuinely social streak, livelier than the quieter resorts in the same collection, with theatre shows that roll into DJ sets and a bar roster that includes a disco bar, a cigar lounge, a beach sand bar and a theatre bar

Cons

  • −Third-party sites, OTAs and every review older than August 2026 still call this resort Excellence El Carmen, so you will be cross-referencing two names while you shop. It is also a separate resort from Excellence Punta Cana, which the brand itself has to keep clarifying
  • −Portions run small compared with other all-inclusives, and guests with big appetites report eating well at dinner and still wanting a late snack
  • −Sargassum hits this stretch of Uvero Alto hard in season, roughly May through October. Staff run tractor and hand cleanup daily, but during heavy influxes the mounds make getting into the water genuinely difficult and some guests end up barely using the beach
  • −The suite ladder is long and confusing, with more than a dozen categories split across the main resort and the Excellence Club, and guests regularly report that what they booked did not match what they pictured. Read the category name literally: plunge pool, private pool, swim-up and rooftop terrace all mean different things here
  • −Several of the best features sit behind the Excellence Club wall, including the heated-in-winter pool areas, the beachfront honeymoon swim-up suites, the Magna restaurant and the included hydrotherapy treatment, so the base rate buys a noticeably plainer version of the resort
  • −Pool areas get crowded in high season despite the pool count, because the loungers cluster around the same few main pools
  • −A few practical catches worth knowing before you book: The Lobster House has an annual closed season for lobster from April 1 to June 30, scuba and some activities carry extra cost even though instruction is included, and dress codes apply at some of the a la carte dinner venues

Common Questions

Is Excellence Carmen Punta Cana the same place as Excellence El Carmen?
Yes. The Excellence Collection renamed Excellence El Carmen to Excellence Carmen Punta Cana in August 2026, and its announcement says the official name is the only thing that changed, with the all-inclusive inclusions, suite concepts, dining and service all preserved. Expect older reviews, OTA listings and third-party sites to keep using the old name for a while. Do not confuse it with Excellence Punta Cana, which is a separate resort under the same brand.
Do I need dinner reservations?
No. The resort's own fact sheet states that reservations are not required for dinner, and the only exception is the teppanyaki station at Spice, the Asian restaurant, which does need one. Dress codes apply at some of the a la carte venues, so pack long trousers and closed shoes for at least a couple of nights. One date-specific catch: The Lobster House observes the annual closed season for lobster from April 1 to June 30, so lobster is off that menu in spring.
How bad is the sargassum, and is the beach any good?
The beach itself is golden sand lined with palms and it is patrolled at both ends, which keeps the vendors who work other Dominican beaches off it entirely. The problem is seaweed. Sargassum lands on this part of the east coast from roughly May through October, staff clear it daily with tractors and by hand, and in a heavy week it can still pile up enough to make swimming unpleasant. If beach days are the point of the trip, book December through April and check recent guest reports close to your dates.
How far is the airport, and is Uvero Alto too isolated?
Punta Cana International is 40 minutes away and La Romana International is 70, both per the resort's fact sheet. Uvero Alto is quieter and far less commercial than Bavaro, which is most of its appeal, but there is essentially nothing within walking distance of the gate. Plan to stay on property, which is easy enough given the dining roster and activity list, and book excursions through the resort for Hoyo Azul, Scape Park or a Saona Island day.
Is the Excellence Club worth paying up for?
It is the real upgrade here rather than a token one. The Club adds a private lounge with front desk service from 7am to 11pm, a lounge bar from 3pm, the Magna restaurant for a la carte breakfast and dinner, private pool areas that are heated in winter, one hydrotherapy treatment per person per stay, L'Occitane toiletries, a Nespresso machine, an upgraded minibar and room service menu, and private check-in. Seven of the nine outdoor Jacuzzis and the beachfront honeymoon swim-up suites are on the Club side too.
Does it work for a honeymoon?
Yes, but it is a celebratory honeymoon rather than a silent one. There are dedicated honeymoon suites, including beachfront swim-ups and rooftop terrace versions with plunge pools, a wedding gazebo, couples spa suites with a shared hydrotherapy tub, and sunsets the resort builds its marketing around. The flip side is theatre shows that turn into DJ sets and a disco bar. Couples who want dancing and cocktails in a beautiful setting will be happy; couples wanting pure quiet should look at the calmer resorts in the same collection.
