Does Punta Cana Get Sargassum?

Punta Cana gets sargassum, and it is one of the more heavily affected destinations in the Caribbean. Its main resort beaches - Bavaro, Cabeza de Toro, Cap Cana and Uvero Alto - face east into the Atlantic, so they catch the sargassum drifting in on the North Equatorial Current from roughly April through September, peaking May to August. Resorts fight it hard with offshore floating barriers and dawn tractor raking, so the sand is usually clear by breakfast even in a bad week, but the water near shore can still be brown and weedy. November through March is reliably the cleanest window.

What to know before you book
- •Beach-by-beach matters more than the town: Cap Cana and Bavaro typically see the most sargassum, Uvero Alto and Cabeza de Toro vary day to day, Macao clears faster because of open-ocean currents, and Bayahibe (an hour southwest, facing the sheltered south coast) stays essentially clean even in Punta Cana's worst weeks.
- •Most large Bavaro and Cap Cana resorts run floating barriers with weighted mesh skirts moored a couple hundred yards offshore, plus crews that rake and haul at sunrise before guests are on the beach - ask a specific hotel whether it has a barrier, not just whether it 'cleans the beach'.
- •The Dominican government funds seaweed removal and its tourism ministry requires coastal maintenance at hotels; NEPA-style heavy-equipment rules are looser here than in Jamaica, so tractors are common.
- •2026 was the second-biggest sargassum year on record behind 2025, with the Caribbean Sea region hitting an all-time monthly high in June; USF reported amounts falling through July and August and expects continued decline into November 2026.
- •Sargassum is a shoreline problem, not a whole-vacation problem - pools, catamaran trips, Saona and Isla Catalina excursions and the Cap Cana marina are unaffected.
