Sargassum is an Atlantic and Caribbean problem, and Mazatlán is on Mexico's Pacific coast. Its actual water issue is occasional red tide in the bay.

Year-round for sargassum (there is none). November through May is dry, mild and the best beach window; July through October is hot, humid, hurricane season and the period with the most beach closures for mar de fondo swell.

What to know before you book

•Red tide is the real recurring phenomenon. UNAM monitoring of Mazatlán Bay has documented 27 microalgae species, 14 of them harmful, with blooms getting more frequent and persistent - partly linked to partially treated sewage discharge.
•Not every discolored bloom is dangerous: Noctiluca scintillans blooms turn the water orange and viscous and make the surf bioluminescent at night. It produces ammonia that harms fish, but is not harmful to people.
•Toxic species that have been identified in the bay (Gymnodinium catenatum, Pseudo-nitzschia, Alexandrium, Dinophysis) mainly matter for shellfish consumption. When authorities declare a marea roja, avoid locally harvested shellfish rather than avoiding the beach entirely.
•Mar de fondo swell periodically closes beach access and the malecon in Mazatlán - this is a wave-height and rip-current issue, not seaweed.
•Mazatlán's beaches are long, open Pacific sand (Zona Dorada, Cerritos, Playa Norte). There is no reef or bay geometry to trap floating algae the way Caribbean beaches trap sargassum.
