What to know before you book

• •The USF Optical Oceanography Lab's Sargassum Watch System - the authoritative satellite monitor - only covers the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. The Mexican Pacific is not in the monitored area because the bloom does not reach it.
• •Red tide (marea roja) is the real seasonal water-quality issue. Purple flags went up around Semana Santa 2026 at spots including Mismaloya, Playa Los Muertos and Nuevo Vallarta; it is a microalgae bloom tied to warming water, not sargassum, and can cause skin or respiratory irritation.
• •Occasional brown and red macroalgae has washed onto nearby Riviera Nayarit beaches such as Rincon de Guayabitos. Mexican press covering the September 2026 season explicitly noted this is NOT sargassum - it is a different local macroalgae driven by currents and nutrients.
• •UNAM-cited reporting notes that Jalisco beaches (Barra de Navidad, Melaque, and Puerto Vallarta on rare occasions) have seen isolated algae arribazones during unusual current or southerly-wind episodes. These are sporadic and nothing like Caribbean sargassum inundation.
• •After heavy summer rain the Rio Cuale and Rio Pitillal push silt and debris into the bay, which discolors the water near town. This is runoff, not seaweed, and clears within days.
• •Beaches near the Malecon and river mouths regularly fly red flags for surf and rip currents in summer; check the daily Proteccion Civil flag report rather than assuming seaweed is the issue.
