Does Cabo San Lucas Get Sargassum?

Cabo San Lucas does not get sargassum. It sits at the tip of Baja California between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, on the opposite side of the continent from the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt, which the USF satellite monitoring program tracks only in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. Medano Beach and the Sea of Cortez side stay clear year-round, and Mexican travel coverage routinely markets Los Cabos as the sargassum-free alternative to Cancun and the Riviera Maya. The real beach hazards in Cabo are surf and currents, not seaweed.

- •Medano Beach, the main swimmable beach in Cabo San Lucas, is on the Sea of Cortez and is sheltered by Land's End. Traveler reports consistently describe it as clean with no seaweed.
- •Los Cabos beaches carry Blue Flag certification for water quality and cleanliness, which requires regular testing - a useful cross-check that this is not a hidden-seaweed destination.
- •The genuine hazard is mar de fondo (long-period Pacific groundswell). In 2026 the Los Cabos municipal government posted red flags on 27 beaches in April and on nearly 50 beaches in July and August. Red means do not enter the water.
- •Purple flags in Los Cabos indicate 'fauna nociva' - harmful marine life such as jellyfish or stingrays - not algae. Do not confuse a purple flag with a seaweed warning.
- •Pacific-facing beaches like Playa Solmar and Playa del Amor's ocean side are not swimmable due to shore break regardless of season; the Sea of Cortez side (Medano, Chileno, Santa Maria) is where you swim and snorkel.
