Does Tulum Get Sargassum?

Tulum is one of the worst-affected destinations in the Mexican Caribbean for sargassum. Its beaches face the open Atlantic with almost no reef or headland protection, so the currents that carry the seaweed west deliver it straight onto the hotel zone; state monitoring in May 2026 flagged the archaeological zone beach and both the north and south hotel zones as having excessive sargassum simultaneously. The heavy season runs roughly March or April through August, sometimes into September, with November through February the genuinely clean window. Small boutique hotels here have far less cleanup capacity than the big Cancun resorts, and because arrivals can rebury a beach within hours of raking, a morning-clean beach is no guarantee for the afternoon.

What to know before you book
- •Tulum's beach is a straight, exposed, reef-free strand - that is exactly why it is beautiful and exactly why it collects sargassum. There is no sheltered corner of the hotel zone the way there is in Cancun; the north and south hotel zones go bad together.
- •For a clean beach day, drive north: Soliman Bay (about 12 km north) and Tankah sit behind a reef that acts as a natural filter and stay far cleaner than Tulum beach. Xcacel is a partially protected cove and is better than the hotel zone but still gets hit in bad weeks - it was on the excessive list in May 2026.
- •Tulum's boutique hotels are small operations; many rake by hand with crews of five to ten, at a cost the state press has put at roughly 30,000-80,000 pesos a month in peak season, and some simply cannot keep up. Ask a hotel directly what its cleaning routine is before booking a beach-zone room in summer.
- •Government floating barriers are experimental here and capture only an estimated 30-50% of approaching sargassum, so do not treat 'the hotel has a barrier' as a guarantee.
- •The cenotes are the reason Tulum still works in sargassum season: Gran Cenote, Dos Ojos, Cenote Calavera and the Sian Ka'an lagoons are all unaffected, as are the ruins themselves.
