Does Riviera Maya Get Sargassum?

Riviera Maya beaches get sargassum every year along the whole corridor from Puerto Morelos south through Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras and Akumal to Tulum, and the three hardest-hit points are Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, all of which face directly east into the open Caribbean. The heavy season runs roughly April through September and peaks in July and August, with November through March the dependable clean window. 2026 has been the worst season on record: the Atlantic belt held 9.5 million tonnes in January and 13.6 million in February against previous records of 7.8 and 4.3 million, the first washups hit in the second week of January rather than April, and Quintana Roo had removed over 104,700 tons by mid-August. Mitigation is now substantial - thousands of metres of offshore barriers, collector vessels and daily raking - but it is unevenly distributed, so conditions can differ sharply between two beaches a kilometre apart.

What to know before you book
- •Barriers genuinely work, but only where they exist. Puerto Morelos Centro, protected by a double barrier plus collector boats, has stayed usable on days when Puerto Morelos Norte a short distance up the beach was swamped - so ask specifically whether your hotel's stretch sits inside a barrier.
- •Puerto Morelos has around 2,300 metres of anti-sargassum barrier, second only to Mahahual statewide; Playa del Carmen ran a 5-km double barrier plus crews at 15 locations for its 2026 season; and Puerto Aventuras bought its own barrier for over 6 million pesos after heavy arrivals fouled its marina and canals.
- •Akumal is the exception to the 'reef bay equals protection' rule. Its horseshoe bay traps sargassum once it gets inside, and some Akumal beaches have been closed outright during 2026 - do not assume the turtle-snorkeling bay is a safe bet in summer.
- •The safest mainland beaches in the region are at the northern end, above Cancun: Costa Mujeres and Playa Mujeres face north and west, have big resorts with well-funded daily cleanup, and stay far clearer than anything south of Puerto Morelos.
- •Hotel occupancy in Quintana Roo fell year-on-year through the 2026 season and some properties in the worst-hit zones cut rates by up to 40%, so summer travel here is now a genuine price-versus-seaweed trade-off rather than just bad luck.
