Does Costa Maya Get Sargassum?

Costa Maya - the Mahahual and Xcalak stretch of southern Quintana Roo - is among the very worst sargassum destinations in Mexico, consistently named alongside Tulum as the state's two hardest-hit zones. Sitting at the southern end of the coast, it intercepts the incoming Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt early and heavily; the Navy collected 2,112 tons here in just ten days in late July 2026, and a July 29, 2026 state report found excessive sargassum concentrated in only 11 beaches statewide, six of them in Mahahual. The bad season runs roughly April through September, with November to February the reliable clean window. Mahahual has the largest deployment of anti-sargassum barriers in the state, but the town's own cleanup crew is small and routinely overwhelmed.

What to know before you book
- •This is a small town, not a resort city: Mahahual's municipal effort has at times been about 30 workers clearing hundreds of tons by hand, so unlike Cancun there is no guarantee your beach gets raked before breakfast. The Navy runs periodic surge operations instead - one recent clean-up used 120 naval personnel plus 250 civilians to shift over 250 tons.
- •Cruise passengers are the most exposed group here. Costa Maya is a cruise port, and a single-day call gives you no flexibility to wait out a bad arrival, so check the state semaforo the morning you dock before committing to a beach club excursion.
- •The Grand Costa Maya barrier system protects the port and the beaches immediately in front of it better than the open beach north and south of town; conditions inside the barrier can be markedly better than a few hundred metres away.
- •Xcalak, further south near the Belize border, gets hit as hard as Mahahual - press coverage in 2026 described both under tons of algae - but Banco Chinchorro, the atoll offshore, was one of the few Quintana Roo zones listed as effectively sargassum-free, so the offshore dive and snorkel trips remain good.
- •The nearby Bacalar lagoon is freshwater and completely unaffected, which makes it the standard rescue plan for a sargassum-ruined beach day on this coast.
