What to know before you book

  • •In July 2025 Cuba's tourism ministry promoted Cayo Santa María as immune to sargassum, crediting currents that push the mats out to sea. The 2026 reporting contradicts that, so take the claim with caution.
  • •This was one of the hardest-hit destinations in Cuba's 2026 hotel consolidation. Valentin Perla Blanca, Sol Cayo Santa María and Meliá Buenavista were among the hotels closed as of February 2026, so confirm the resort you book is open.
  • •Cayo Santa María is reached through Santa Clara airport, which Sunwing and WestJet Vacations scheduled to reopen to their flights on October 25, 2026, after a suspension that began June 20.
