What to know before you book

  • •The island splits roughly along a north-south line. Local guidance in April 2026 described beaches west of it as typically unaffected and those east of it as occasionally hit, depending on the wind. If you are choosing a resort, location on the island matters more than the month.
  • •Le Galion is a protected nature reserve, so machinery cannot be used to clear it. Orient Bay, by contrast, is cleaned regularly, and Dawn Beach hotels run early-morning clean-ups that travelers say keep the sand mostly clear.
  • •In August 2026 the Collectivity began installing floating diversion barriers in Cul-de-Sac bay (180 m and 520 m), with two more planned for Embouchure bay in October. Anchoring and water sports are banned along the barrier lines. Pinel Island day-trippers will notice them.
  • •Anse Marcel is a sheltered north-facing cove. No reports linking it to sargassum strandings turned up, but it sits on the exposed side of the island, so treat it as lower-risk rather than immune.
  • •Météo-France publishes a twice-weekly sargassum bulletin covering Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy, with a 4-day beaching-risk rating. It is the most reliable thing to check in the week before a trip.
