What to know before you book

  • •Boca Chica's shallow, reef-enclosed lagoon is what makes it a calm family beach, and it is also what makes sargassum so bad here: semicircular bays on this coast act as natural traps, holding the algae in place as it rots instead of letting currents carry it off.
  • •In late September 2025 a mass arrival at Boca Chica and Guayacanes depleted the oxygen in the water and killed thousands of fish, and vendors reported weekend sales near zero. Late-season arrivals are a real risk here, not only the early-summer peak.
  • •In June 2026 the Ministry of Tourism delivered 42 pieces of equipment to Boca Chica - 30 trucks, six tractors and six beach sweepers - so municipal cleanup capacity is better than it was, but it is still reactive removal after the seaweed lands.
  • •Juan Dolio is a weekend escape for Santo Domingo and much of the beach is public. Resorts rake their own frontage; public stretches between hotels can sit with piles for days.
  • •A June 2026 risk assessment based on USF satellite projections rated Juan Dolio-Guayacanes as high risk for the season, one step below Punta Cana-Bavaro and the Miches coast.
  • •Bayahibe, about an hour east, is the realistic escape: it sits behind Saona Island and stays much cleaner on the same days.
