Does The Bahamas Get Sargassum?

The Bahamas gets far less sargassum than the eastern and southern Caribbean, and most visitors never see a problem. The islands sit north of the main sargassum transport route and their vast shallow banks break up and deflect the mats before they reach shore, so Nassau's Cable Beach, Paradise Island and the classic Exuma and Abaco beaches usually stay clear. The exceptions are the exposed Atlantic-facing east shores of the Out Islands and the occasional big pulse in a heavy year - Nassau's Montagu Beach and Western Esplanade took an unusually large influx in early September 2026 that prompted a government cleanup program.

What to know before you book
- •Geography is the reason the Bahamas does well: the archipelago lies north of the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt's main westward path, and the shallow Great and Little Bahama Banks disrupt the mats before they can pile up on shore.
- •Within any island, pick the leeward side. On Eleuthera the Caribbean-side beaches such as Ten Bay stay clean while the Atlantic-facing east shore collects weed; the same windward/leeward rule holds on Abaco, Cat Island and Long Island.
- •Nassau is not immune in a big year. On 4 September 2026 the Bahamas Public Parks and Public Beaches Authority launched a sargassum cleanup pilot with a green-waste recycler after an 'extremely high volume' of seaweed hit Montagu Beach and the Western Esplanade; collected weed is being composted rather than dumped.
- •2026 was the second-largest sargassum year in the satellite record behind 2025, with roughly 34 million metric tons in the Atlantic belt in June, so even a low-risk destination like the Bahamas saw more than a typical year.
- •Bahamas beach cleanup is far less industrialised than in Punta Cana or Cancun - there are no offshore barriers, so a rare influx clears on its own timetable rather than being raked away nightly.
