What to know before you book

  • •Don't confuse Holguín with the Baracoa and Guantánamo coasts further east. Those coasts made Cuban news in July 2026 for tons of decomposing sargassum and health warnings, and local cleanup there relied on volunteer brigades short of equipment. That is a different coast, more than 100 km from the Guardalavaca hotels.
  • •Cuba's tourism ministry listed Guardalavaca as sargassum-free in 2025 marketing. Independent reporting on the north Holguín beaches is thin, so the claim can neither be confirmed nor ruled out.
  • •Holguín's resort strip was not spared the 2026 fuel-saving closures (Gran Muthu Ensenada was among the hotels shut in February), and Sunwing and WestJet Vacations did not schedule Holguín flights to restart until October 25, 2026. That means most package visitors arrive in the low-risk season anyway.
