Jamaica gets sargassum, but almost all of it lands on the south and east coasts rather than on the north-coast resort strip most visitors book. Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Negril sit on the sheltered north and west sides of the island and usually see only light, intermittent seaweed, while Portland, St Thomas, St Catherine and parts of Westmoreland's south shore take the brunt during the May-to-August peak. If you are staying anywhere between Negril and Ocho Rios, sargassum is unlikely to define your trip in any month.

What to know before you book
- •Jamaica's national environment agency (NEPA) names Portland, St Thomas, St Catherine and Westmoreland as the parishes that bear the brunt of influxes - that is the east end, the south coast around Hellshire, and stretches of the far southwest, not the Montego Bay/Ocho Rios tourist corridor.
- •Negril's Seven Mile Beach faces west into the sheltered Caribbean and is the least sargassum-prone major resort beach on the island; Tripadvisor regulars consistently report it as a non-issue, though not perfectly consistent.
- •Jamaica runs a three-tier National Sargassum Response Strategy: hotel and beach operators handle daily raking, parish councils and the national waste authority handle larger events. NEPA prohibits tractors and front-end loaders without a permit, so removal is mostly hand and belt-raking and cleanup is slower than in the Dominican Republic.
- •The Jamaica Sargassum Early Advisory System (JSEAS) issues local warnings using USF satellite data - worth checking if you are booked on the south or east coast in summer.
- •2026 was the second-largest sargassum year on satellite record behind 2025; the Caribbean Sea region peaked in June and USF measured declines through July and August with further decline expected into November.
