Does Acapulco Get Sargassum?

Guerrero · Mexico

No — not a sargassum destination

Sargassum is an Atlantic and Caribbean problem, and Acapulco is on Mexico's Pacific coast. The bigger issues are bacteria levels at a few city beaches and the June-to-October rains.

Clearest water
Year-round for sargassum (there is none). For overall conditions, December through April is dry and sunny; September and early October carry the highest hurricane and flooding risk - Hurricane John stalled over the city in late September 2024 with roughly 90 hours of rain.

What to know before you book

  • •Hurricane Otis hit as a Category 5 in October 2023 and wrecked much of the hotel stock. By January 2026 visitor numbers for 2025 were up 89.5% on the post-storm baseline, and the waterfront malecon by the Zocalo has been rebuilt, but some properties reopened later than others. Check recent dated reviews for your specific hotel.
  • •Hurricane John in September 2024 did a different kind of damage: flooding of a metre or more in 31 neighbourhoods of the Diamante zone, including Las Gaviotas and the areas around Laguna de Tres Palos, plus landslides that closed sections of the Autopista del Sol. That is where many of the newer all-inclusives sit.
  • •Water quality, not seaweed, is the long-running beach complaint. Cofepris has flagged bay beaches such as Caletilla, Hornos and Playa Suave as unfit for swimming in past sampling rounds, though no Guerrero beach made its summer 2026 list. The open-ocean beaches of Diamante are generally cleaner but have heavier surf.
  • •Revolcadero and the long Diamante beachfront face open Pacific swell; rip currents there are a more realistic hazard than anything floating in the water.
