What to know before you book

• •The 25 km of beach on the south side of the cay faces the open Caribbean, the same water that delivered record sargassum to Mexico and Central America in 2026.
• •Cayo Largo is a remote, small island with a handful of hotels and no town behind them. Cleanup depends entirely on hotel staff, and in a year when Cuba is short of fuel and has closed many hotels, there is no reserve labour to call in.
• •Canadian charter service is seasonal: Sunwing and WestJet Vacations scheduled Cayo Largo to restart on October 25, 2026, after the summer suspension, which keeps most package visitors here in the lower-risk winter months.
• •USF's August 2026 satellite bulletin found sargassum declining in every region but still above historical norms, and expected beaching around the Caribbean to continue, less severely, until about November. Early-season (late October and November) arrivals could still find some seaweed.
