What to know before you book

• •Geography beats luck here: the Hotel Zone bends around Punta Cancun, so the northern leg (roughly km 1-9, facing Isla Mujeres and the bay) is sheltered, while the long eastern leg (km 9-20, including Playa Delfines) faces the open Caribbean and collects the weed. Booking a north-Hotel-Zone or Costa Mujeres property is the single most effective thing you can do.
• •2026 broke the seasonal pattern: the state reported the massive arrival beginning January 5, about two months earlier than the historical April start, so the old 'safe until April' rule no longer holds reliably.
• •Quintana Roo has about 9,000 meters of offshore containment barriers deployed, plus Navy (SEMAR) sargasseras (collector vessels) and beach crews; Copernicus satellite data and drones feed a daily beach-by-beach semaforo. In late May 2026 that semaforo had 4 Cancun beaches red, 2 orange and 4 green on the same day, which shows how much variation there is within one city.
• •Big resorts clear their beach at dawn, so the 7-10am window is usually the cleanest and the afternoon the worst. Sargassum that has already washed up and sat in the sun is what produces the sulfur smell, not the fresh floating weed.
• •The lagoon side, Isla Mujeres ferries, cenotes, Xcaret/Xel-Ha and the reef snorkeling out at MUSA are unaffected by sargassum, so a heavy week changes what you do rather than ruining the trip.
