Does Belize Get Sargassum?

Belize does get sargassum, and 2026 was one of its worst seasons on record. Thick mats hit Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Placencia and Hopkins as early as Easter, and by July sargassum was washing ashore in Belize City for the first time at a noticeable scale. The heavy months are roughly April through October, peaking June to August; January through March is reliably the clearest window thanks to northerly winds. Location matters enormously - lagoon-side and west-facing spots like Secret Beach on Ambergris Caye and the Placencia Lagoon side stay clear even in peak season.

What to know before you book
- •Belize's National Sargassum Task Force procured dedicated equipment ahead of the 2026 season: a Barber beach rake, parts for Placencia's existing rake, a Weedoo TC-3014 shallow-water workboat, and a DESMI Tri-Turtle floating offshore collector.
- •Exposure varies by orientation. Hopkins and the southern tip of the Placencia peninsula face east-southeast and get the worst of it; Ambergris Caye's Front Street and eastern shore get moderate amounts near the reef opening.
- •Reliably clear spots even in peak season: Secret Beach and the western lagoon side of Ambergris Caye, the Split on Caye Caulker, and offshore reef and atoll snorkel/dive sites.
- •Belize's barrier reef means most swimming happens off docks and piers in deeper water past the seagrass, so a sargassum-lined shoreline affects the smell and the view more than the actual swimming for many visitors.
- •The economic hit is real - Belize tourism operators reported booking declines of up to 30 percent during the prior heavy season, and decomposing mats have smothered nearshore coral and depressed oxygen levels.
- •Inland Belize (San Ignacio, Cayo, the Mountain Pine Ridge, Mayan sites) is entirely unaffected, so a split itinerary is a common workaround during peak sargassum months.
