Does Curaçao Get Sargassum?

Curaçao gets sargassum, but almost all of it lands on the wild north and east coast rather than where visitors stay. Every significant beach and resort — Mambo, Jan Thiel, Blue Bay, Cas Abao, Playa Porto Mari, Grote Knip — is on the sheltered leeward south and west coast, which stays clear and swimmable through most of the year. The windward side, including Shete Boka National Park and Sint Joris Bay, collects thick mats during the spring and summer influx. Curaçao is rated more affected than Aruba but far less than the Eastern Caribbean islands.

What to know before you book
- •Clear: the leeward south and west coast — Mambo Beach, Jan Thiel, Blue Bay, Cas Abao, Playa Porto Mari, Grote Knip and Playa Kenepa. Essentially all hotels, dive operators and beach clubs are here, in bays protected from the Atlantic swell that carries sargassum.
- •Affected: the windward north and east coast — Shete Boka National Park, Sint Joris Bay and Boca Ascencion. Local reporting in May 2026 described thick brown mats and decomposition odor at Shete Boka.
- •The Sargassum Information Hub ranks Curaçao 'moderately impacted' — more than Aruba, less than Bonaire, which sits upwind and shields the chain.
- •Mitigation includes repurposed oil booms used to corral and guide sargassum accumulation, plus manual and mechanized removal.
- •Even in 2026, when USF recorded record-high June sargassum in the Caribbean Sea, Curaçao's south-coast swimming beaches stayed largely unaffected.
