What to know before you book

  • •Cuba's tourism ministry marketed Varadero as immune to sargassum in July 2025, attributing it to currents that carry the mats east. A year later, in the record 2026 season, Cuban press named Varadero among the affected beaches. Treat "sargassum-free" claims from either side as marketing; light-to-moderate summer arrivals are the realistic expectation.
  • •Most Canadian package travel to Varadero was paused through the 2026 peak: Sunwing and WestJet Vacations cancelled Cuba services from June 20 to October 9, 2026, with Varadero flights resuming October 10. A winter booking is outside the sargassum window anyway.
  • •Cuba's energy crisis has shrunk the resort strip: by Havana Times' count, only around 20 of Varadero's roughly 50 hotels were still operating after February 2026, and occupancy was about 20% in May. No source documents beach-raking cutbacks specifically, but with reduced staffing at open hotels, check recent guest reviews for your specific hotel's beach rather than assuming the crews that once cleaned it daily are still in place.
  • •When the 2026 arrivals hit, Varadero hotels responded with specialized beach-cleaning machinery, according to Cuban press, and maintenance crews on the northern cays worked extended shifts. That is a better cleanup capacity than most of Cuba has, but it depends on each hotel's fuel and staffing.
  • •"Varadero" here also covers Jibacoa, the small resort beach between Havana and Matanzas on the same north coast. It sees the same pattern, with less cleanup capacity than the main peninsula.
