Does Puerto Plata Get Sargassum?

North coast · Dominican Republic

Yes — Light in season

Puerto Plata gets far less sargassum than Punta Cana, and in most weeks it is not a factor. In heavy years it can arrive in early summer, with open beaches like Cabarete hit first.

What to know before you book

  • •Sosua's main beach sits in a small, sheltered bay and is the most consistently clear beach on this stretch; travelers report calm, seaweed-free water there even in seasons when the south and east coasts were badly hit.
  • •Cabarete is the exposed one. It is an open, wind-facing beach (it hosted the surfing events of the July 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games), and the local business association has run its own sargassum cleanups in past arrival years.
  • •Playa Dorada and Costa Dorada resorts rake their own frontage. Public beaches such as Long Beach in Puerto Plata town get less attention, so a bad week looks worse there than in front of the hotels.
  • •2026 was the second-largest sargassum year on satellite record, yet current tracker assessments still rate the north coast as far clearer than Punta Cana, and no 2026 reporting found here describes a sustained Puerto Plata inundation.
