Excellence Riviera Cancun vs Atelier Playa Mujeres

Couples booking a first all-inclusive or a honeymoon, wanting a relaxing week with good food, compare these two and worry about Atelier's dinner reservations. Excellence Riviera Cancun is the quieter, hacienda-style Excellence resort near Puerto Morelos; Atelier is the larger art-and-food hotel inside the gated Playa Mujeres enclave to the north (adults-only there means 16 and up).

What Real Travelers Say

Distilled from real traveler discussions and reviews for each resort.

Excellence Riviera Cancun

What travelers love

  • +About 20 minutes from Cancun airport, which is the shortest transfer of any comparable adults-only resort on this coast and means you are at the pool while Tulum-bound travelers are still on the highway
  • +Adults only, 18 and over, and all-suite: the entry-level Junior Suites are 668 square feet, and the top categories run to a 1,060 square foot two-story rooftop terrace suite, a 1,993 square foot Imperial Suite and a 2,080 square foot Honeymoon Suite Ocean Front with a rooftop terrace
  • +Walk-in dining is the real draw. The resort lists ten restaurants inside 13 dining options, and most of them take no reservation at all: Chez Isabelle for French, Oregano for Italian, Agave for Mexican, Basmati for Indian, The Grill for steak, Lobster House for seafood, Spice for Asian, Las Olas for beachfront lunch, The Kitchen Table for breakfast and Flavor Market, plus Food Shark, a healthy-cuisine outlet, a Sports Bar and pool and beach service
  • +Six meandering pools set through tropical gardens, including heated pools, pools that connect directly to the swim-up suites and bar-side pools, with three whirlpools in the pool areas and two more in the spa
  • +Miile Spa is a genuine facility rather than a treatment room: a hydrotherapy pool with swan and waterfall high-pressure hoses, steam rooms, ice-cold plunge pools, ten indoor treatment rooms (four of them for couples), two master rooms with hydrotherapy tubs, and a full-service beauty salon

Common complaints

  • −The free airport transfer everyone quotes is conditional. As of October 2026 it applies to suite-only reservations of at least three nights booked directly with Excellence. If you book through an online travel agency or as a flight package, transfers are not included and you arrange them yourself through Seasons Transfers at your own cost
  • −A lot of what reads as included is not. Spa treatments are charged (the 100-minute couples wellness journey lists at $640 before promotion, and the only built-in saving is 20 percent off regular prices for booking before arrival, which excludes salon services), and scuba diving with instruction, deep sea fishing and private yacht excursions all carry extra cost. Only the non-motorized water sports are in the base rate
  • −The Excellence Club is a resort within a resort in a literal sense. The upgrade gates the Magna restaurant, a private beach area, private pool areas (heated in winter), the Club Lounge and its separate Lounge Bar, one hydrotherapy treatment per person per stay, an upgraded in-suite liquor selection and an upgraded room service menu, so staying outside it means a visibly smaller resort
  • −Six pools total across 440 suites, with one of the six reserved for Excellence Club and one accessible pool, so the main pool areas and the better loungers go early in high season
  • −Quiet by design, which cuts both ways. There is no nightclub or disco: the night is outdoor-theater shows, mariachi, theme nights and bar and lounge music, and the resort bans portable speakers in public areas to protect the atmosphere. Travelers wanting late energy consistently prefer the larger Playa Mujeres sister property

Atelier Playa Mujeres

What travelers love

  • +Thirteen restaurants, twelve bars and two coffee shops for one property, with Wine Spectator, Distintivo T and AAA Diamond recognition on the kitchens, and the food is the reason most guests rebook rather than a bonus on top of the beach
  • +Playa Mujeres faces northwest instead of straight into the Caribbean, so it takes noticeably less sargassum than the Cancun Hotel Zone or the Riviera Maya, and crews have the guest beach cleared by about 9am most mornings
  • +All five pools run automatic heating, which matters in January when unheated pools along this coast sit at a temperature nobody wants to get into
  • +Built as a working art hotel rather than one with a lobby sculpture: an Art Walk through the public spaces, commissioned pieces throughout the 593 suites and the ATELIER Artist Service program that staff are trained around
  • +Inside the gated Playa Mujeres enclave about 18 miles and a 25-minute drive north of Cancun airport, which means no vendors working the sand, no timeshare pitch by the pool and no neighboring party resort bleeding bass through the night

Common complaints

  • −Maria Dolores by Edgar Nunez, the signature restaurant and the one worth planning a night around, carries an additional charge on top of the all-inclusive rate. Only INSPIRA Suites guests get a dinner there included, and the length of stay decides whether they do
  • −Ten of the thirteen restaurants require a reservation, including the buffet at La Consentida. Only Cafecito, Azucar, Alba and the poolside Bikini Azul are walk-ins, so a week here means booking your dinners on the day you arrive
  • −The fifth-floor infinity pool at El Cielo Sky Bar, the one in most of the photography, belongs to INSPIRA Suites guests from 10am to 4pm and only opens to the whole resort from 6pm. Guests who booked a Junior Suite on the strength of that picture are regularly caught out
  • −NUUP Spa treatments, the 18-hole Greg Norman golf course, motorized water sports and the Pet-It dog program are all billed separately, and Pet-It also needs advance confirmation because not every suite is pet-eligible
  • −At 593 suites this is a large resort wearing boutique language, and during peak weeks the main pool runs short of loungers not long after breakfast

The Verdict

Guests lean hard to Atelier, and food is why: thirteen restaurants and twelve bars, craft cocktails in real glasses, and service that, guests warn, sets the bar high. The reservation worry is manageable; ten of thirteen need bookings, yet a party of seven got into every one at spring break, and only teppanyaki is hard to land. The signature Maria Dolores costs extra. Its beach takes less sargassum. Excellence answers with walk-in dinners bar Spice's teppanyaki, a 20-minute airport run, shore snorkeling on the reef, swim-up suites on the lazy river, and a lower rate, though guests call dinner hit or miss and the beach weak. Foodies go Atelier; couples who'd rather never book a table go Excellence.

Choose Excellence Riviera Cancun if…

You'd rather never book a table, a 20-minute airport run matters, and snorkeling a reef straight off the beach beats a paid excursion.

Choose Atelier Playa Mujeres if…

Food and cocktails are the point, you want nightly shows and a beach cleared of seaweed by nine, and you'll book the week's dinners at check-in.
