Finest Playa Mujeres vs SLS Playa Mujeres

Families who've done Finest and want somewhere new, and groups mixing adults with a toddler or two, weigh these two on the sheltered coast north of Cancun. Finest is the Excellence Collection's family resort with an adults-only club side; SLS is the design-led newcomer, open since late 2024, with a golf course and marina attached.

What Real Travelers Say

Distilled from real traveler discussions and reviews for each resort.

Finest Playa Mujeres

What travelers love

  • +Ten pools and fourteen jacuzzis across the property, many of them heated, with enough variety that guests find their preferred vibe without competing for space
  • +Calmer, clearer water than most Mexico resorts thanks to the sheltered Playa Mujeres location, well north of the sargassum-heavy stretches of the Riviera Maya
  • +Twelve restaurants and you don't book any of them except the teppanyaki at Shoji, which takes the 7 a.m. reservation scramble out of the trip entirely. The range is real: Duke's for lobster and seafood, Brass Steakhouse, Tinto & Tapas for Spanish small plates, Insieme for Italian, Lizo for Mexican, Shoji for Japanese, Las Dunas on the beach, plus adults-only Dommo and Le Petit Plaisir
  • +Suites are large across the board: 800 sq ft entry-level Junior Suites, 950 sq ft Family Suites sleeping five, and swim-up, private-pool and two-storey rooftop-terrace-with-plunge-pool categories running up to 3,400 sq ft
  • +The Imagine Lounge is mealtime childcare, open 7 to 11 a.m. and 5 to 10:30 p.m. for potty-trained children aged three and up, so parents actually get a quiet breakfast and dinner

Common complaints

  • −The kids club tops out at eleven and teenagers are the worst-served guests here. Imagine Kids Club runs a Mini Club for ages 0 to 2 with a parent and 3 to 6 for drop-off, and a Maxi Club for 7 to 11; the FAQ mentions a teen entertainment lounge but the resort's own kids pages name nothing above age eleven, families with kids aged seven and up report the programming skews much younger than the marketing suggests, and teens are shut out of the Excellence Club pools, lounge and restaurants entirely
  • −Very strict pool chair enforcement with security clipboards is described by some travelers as oppressive rather than relaxing, and it still doesn't fully stop the towel race. A February 2026 guest report had the main pool claimed by 7 a.m.
  • −It is not a true adults-only resort, which surprises guests who assume the Excellence connection means adult exclusivity. Only the Excellence Club section, the Dommo and Le Petit Plaisir restaurants and the Glow lounge keep children out, and in summer the family clientele makes the rest of the property substantially louder and more crowded than the branding suggests
  • −Late-night options for adults are thin: the Excellence Club Lounge closes at 11 p.m. and its bar only runs 3 to 11 p.m., Glow Cocktail Lounge covers 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., and no dedicated nightclub appears among the resort's twelve bars and lounges
  • −Specialty restaurant food is described by some travelers as good rather than great, which stings a little at this price positioning

SLS Playa Mujeres

What travelers love

  • +Greg Norman-designed 18-hole golf course on the property delivers a world-class round with Caribbean Sea views between shots
  • +Adults-only pool area provides a genuinely tranquil escape from the family waterpark, with cabanas and a swim-up bar
  • +Dining is a full tier above typical all-inclusive quality - nightly a la carte restaurants earn consistent praise from even seasoned travelers
  • +Kids Club and teens club with structured daily activities frees up parents to actually relax by the pool
  • +Beach sits in the Playa Mujeres zone, which regularly has cleaner sand and less sargassum seaweed than Cancun Hotel Zone beaches

Common complaints

  • −Even after 16+ months of operation, some systems and processes are still being worked out - expect occasional service inconsistencies
  • −There is no lunch or dinner buffet - the only buffet is breakfast at The Market - and the main lunch options are outdoors, which is rough in peak summer heat and genuinely tough for families with kids
  • −Restaurant reservations are extremely hard to get - a July 2026 guest reported every a la carte restaurant fully booked for their entire stay and being pushed to room service instead
  • −Premium wines and spirits carry surcharges, and guests report noticeable upsell pressure from bartenders - a sour note at a resort commanding $699/night rates
  • −The family side lags the adult side - the family pool is widely described as 'an afterthought' next to the adults-only Privilege pool, and the kids' water park has zero shade plus a beach dumpster adjacent to the slides that produces odor

The Verdict

Kids' ages and dinner plans settle it. Finest's site lists eleven restaurants and only Shoji's teppanyaki takes a reservation, mealtime childcare takes potty-trained kids from three, and a guest who's done both calls its beach nicer and more swimmable than SLS's, which runs beside a marina. Its kids club stops at eleven. SLS cooks better by most accounts and adds a teen club, golf and an adults-only pool, but it only buffets breakfast, tables can be booked solid all week, service is still uneven, the family pool reads as an afterthought and the kids' water park has no shade, all at a noticeably higher rate. Toddlers and under-sevens go Finest; teens, and parents who rank dinner first, go SLS.

Choose Finest Playa Mujeres if…

Your kids are six or under, you'd rather never book a dinner, and a calmer, swimmable beach beats a sharper kitchen.
