Anegada day trip

Day trip · Buck Island, British Virgin Islands

Anegada looks nothing like the rest of the BVI. It is a flat island of coral and limestone whose highest point is about 28 feet above the sea, 15 miles north of Virgin Gorda and too low to be seen from it. Horseshoe Reef, 18 miles long and one of the largest barrier reefs in the Caribbean, wraps around it and has wrecked hundreds of ships, which is why many yacht charter companies forbid their clients to sail here. The day trip goes on the Smith's Ferry Service boat from Road Town, which runs three days a week, out in the morning and back in the late afternoon, stopping at Virgin Gorda both ways. Charter flights take about ten minutes.

On the island, rent a jeep or ask a restaurant to call a taxi. Cow Wreck Beach, Flash of Beauty, Windlass Bight and Bones Bight are long and quiet enough to spend a day without meeting anyone, with reefs offshore for snorkelling. Flamingos, reintroduced after being hunted out, live on the salt ponds at the west end, where visitor numbers are kept low so the flock can grow. In The Settlement, a headstart centre raises young Anegada rock iguanas, found nowhere else, and piles of empty conch shells line the shore. Lobster is the local catch, and Anegada's fishermen supply most of the rest of the BVI with it.
