Norman Island and The Caves snorkel trip

Day trip · Tortola, British Virgin Islands

Three caves open at water level at the foot of the cliffs just west of the Bight, and you snorkel straight in. Go deep enough and it gets so dark it feels like a night dive. Norman Island itself is uninhabited apart from wild goats, privately owned and about 2.5 miles long, and it is one of several islands said to have inspired Treasure Island. The pirate link is real: in 1750 silver from a Spanish galleon was buried here, and people from Tortola went over and dug it up.

The Bight, a big sheltered harbour, is one of the most protected anchorages in the islands. Ashore there are two restaurants, Pirates Bight and The Club, and the Willy T, a bar on a copy of an old schooner, sits at anchor about 500 feet off the beach.
