El Meco Ruins

From the top of El Castillo the Maya watched the canoes coming and going from Isla Mujeres. The five-tier pyramid at El Meco is 12.5 metres high, the tallest Maya building on this coast, and its temple faces the sea, which is rare. Around it are altars, shrines and a main plaza from the port that thrived here between 1200 and 1500.

The site sits on the road between the Puerto Juárez and Punta Sam ferry terminals, so it fits neatly before or after an Isla Mujeres crossing. It is quiet and rarely crowded, has a small museum, and reopened with new visitor facilities after the same upgrade that went through the other Quintana Roo sites.
